“very nice hotel - but very cold when weather is cold”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

We stayed in Dona Esther hotel for 2 nights. Unfortunately the weather was cold, and it rained quite a bit. The hotel doesn't have any heating facilities - not even in public areas like the restaurants and the beautiful library (we asked but this was the answer we got). The waitress at breakfast was wearing a jacket with the hat on (as she was freezing) - and we had to wear our coats all the time when we were in our rooms or in the library in the evenings, The blankets are poor - we had 3 and asked for more.
Apart from that - if the weather is nice - it is a wonderful place - very nicely kept and decorated. So - I recomend to check the weather before checking in.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms have outside porch - which is nice but tends to be noisy. Other rooms have a windo...

Sorry to hear you experienced a cold stay with us! Indeed January was a very cold and rainy period. We're not used to such long period of rain and/or cold, which is the reason our waitress in the morning was cold: she was recovering from a bad cold, as suffered by many Otavaleños this past month. Luckily, the weather improved, but will always be unpredictable in Ecuador. As written so many times in guide books, you can experience 4 seasons in one day and there's no way to foretell the weather....... although international sites do try with a weather forecast for Ecuador.....it never works out for me. People here tend to live with it, take an extra shawl or poncho when they leave the house and take it off easily when it's turns out to be warm. Heating is still a luxury here, but nevertheless, we'll try and work on some things.

“Good location, good rooms, nice courtyard”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2011

Near the plaza with the mayor's offices and church. We walked out for bakery goods for breakfast in the morning, and loved Otavalo. Lots of traditional dress and kids in their school uniforms. Feels a lot safer and more relaxed than Quito. Lots of places don't heat the rooms, and if you need extra warmth, take a down throw along. The hotel has a pretty courtyard.

“Location, Location, Location!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

As you may have surmised from the title of this brief article, the main point about this hostal/hotel is where it is situated: four blocks from Poncho Plaza - site of a daily market and the truly superb Saturday extravaganza, four to five blocks from the indigenous Saturday animal market, two blocks from a pleasant park, and, within a radius of a block or two, some pretty good restaurants. But you don't have to leave the premise to dine, as there is a restaurant within serving breakfast and dinner, and a small interior courtyard where one can take a self-catered lunch gleaned from the nearby convenience store ( the one vending Argentine and Chillean whites ) or from the small produce market adjacent the train station. There are also a few Bank ATM's in the vicinity; just what you'll likely require after a few turns through the Plaza. Arrive on a Friday, the night before the Saturday market and you can expect to be serenaded late into the evening by a Pan band. The house plan is colonial, the rooms rising aove around interior facing balconies. The rooms are spartan but clean and the price is modest for the location and service. There is a locked front gate, the interior accessed by a bell, providing that extra security all travelers require in their repose. Check it out; it's a budget travelers best!

“Traditional Otavalo Style Residence with Great Location and Hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2011

Hostal Dona Esther is in the perfect location, in the heart of Otavalo, near Plaza Bolivar. You can walk everywhere easily. Stay a day or two or three and enjoy it as a base camp for day trips to Cotacachi, Ibarra, and to see the surrounding wonders of nature. It is clean, comfortable, and has thoughtful amenities like candles in the rooms. Breakfast is served daily, dinner every night but Monday if I remember correctly. The produce is from an organic farm in Ibarra, and the recipes are the hosts. Try the traditional Ecuadorian Andean potato soup with cheese and avocado (Locro di Papa) and a local liquor called canelaso. The prices for lodging and food are reasonable; perfect for the budget traveler looking for an authentic, reliable Ecuadorian experience. - Wendy Jane of West Hollywood, CA

Thank you, Wendy, for these great comments on our hotel, restaurant ánd the Otavalo area. It sure helps to make future guests realize how beautiful the area is. You told me about the "fiesta" you heard one night, and you're right, this is part of the indigenous culture and a part of Ecuador.
Hope to see you back some time! Wendy

“Very quaint little hostel.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 November 2011

Quaint little hostel with rooms that surroound an out door courtyard. Very charming place.
On site restraunt had fabulous home cooked meals and a pizza oven for the pizza lover.
Stay and meals were quite reasonable and hostel is within wlking distance to the market.
I would reccomend this place highly.

Room Tip: All rooms are excellent except for room #4. It is abouve the kitchen and it can be very noisy.

Thanks very much for your nice review, We will certainly keep your remark about room no. 4 in mind, and see if we can do something about that. We will at least start by asking the ladies in the kitchen to keep it down!
