“Best hotel in the area”

Guayaquil is not a huge city and we had a layover coming from Lima on our way to Galapagos. I use up my remaining Hilton Honors points and we had a great stay. The hotel is in a very safe area on a few kilometers from the airport and walking distance to the tourist attractions (if there are any...). We only spent one night, but it was one of the best Hampton Inn's I've ever stayed in (and there were many others). It comparable to a Hilton standard in the US. The room service was excellent. We were craving for burgers and fries after weeks for south american food and weren't disappointed.

Hampton Inn is IMO the best choice when staying in Guayaquil. They also run a free shuttle bus to the airport. We also tried to get picked up by the shuttle but that somehow did not work out. We took one of the official airport cabs and paid something like $5 to the hotel.

Guayaquil airport is efficient and not comparable to the crazy Lima airport. Friendly staff and no one who wants to grab your bags. Actually, we were pretty much left alone, which was nice for a change.

“Stayed there and things went wrong both times, but the management worked very hard to fix things as best as they could.”

We stayed at this hotel for one night before going to the Galapagos and one night afterward.

The shuttle worked perfectly. With the close proximity of the downtown area to the airport, this is a really efficient way of getting to the hotel quickly. When we arrived at the hotel on the first stay, our check in was quick and the rooms were typical Hampton Inn - clean and comfortable and everything worked.

What went wrong on this stay was with the laundry service. We gave them a large number of items to wash. It was New Year's Eve day, so things were a little chaotic given the festivities near the Malecon. In any case, they did our laundry really quickly, but they lost a shirt. They worked really hard to find it, but their laundry vendor couldn't locate it. But the hotel was very gracious about this and gave us a big deduction from the total laundry bill. We know that stuff happens when you travel and we didn't get upset about it.

On the 2nd stay, the hotel was hot and stuffy when we arrived and our rooms were unbearable. I went down to the front desk and asked what was going on and they gave me a photocopied page saying there was trouble with the city's electrical grid which was affecting the air conditioning. The desk manager said they were hopeful they would get it fixed. About 2 hours later, we came back to the hotel, but there was no improvement and the air conditioning was not operating.

When I spoke to the desk, the general manager came out and spoke with me and told me that they had reserved a block of rooms at a nearby hotel. I checked this hotel out quickly on TripAdvisor and it looked fine. So, they quickly moved us over to the other hotel at no additional charge. The replacement hotel didn't offer an airport shuttle, so the next morning the Hampton shuttle came over and took us and two other 'orphans' to the airport.

While our experience wasn't the greatest with the Hampton, I give them a lot of credit to being customer-friendly and doing what they could to make the situations as acceptable as possible.

As a result, I am being a lot more supportive of them in my rating than I normally would be.

Were booked here by tour operator GalapagosIslands.com, and were happy with the rate, quality, and location.
Gym is pretty weak, but we weren't there for long.

“Good location. Friendly staff. Hotel should be renovated.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2012

If you have to spend a night in Guayaquil this hotel is in a good location, near the Malecon. The staff are very friendly although we found their English to be occasionally poor (especially the night staff and the bell boys) and if one small thing went wrong in the check-in or check-out process, chaos descended.

We were on a group tour and luckier in our room allocation, by all accounts, than others. The only problem with our room was that it stank - and I mean reeked - of furniture wax. We didn't ask to change as we were on an upper floor and didn't want to get relocated further down (the location is noisy, the windows weren't the best).

Other than that the room service was pretty bad and the paper bag breakfast (we were leaving early) was rubbish. The advice to us was to leave our valuables (including large cameras) in the safe deposit box in our room; that's true of any city in the world. But I felt there was definitely something sketchy about the hotel and the area (in this case a busy shopping district).

Room Tip: Go for high up, or stay somewhere else.

“Very happy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2012

The staff in this hotel were very friendly, and assisted with whatever I requested. The buffet breakfast had a great selection, even for a picky eater like me. The room was always brilliantly clean. It is in a good location, within walking distance of everything I wanted to see. I would recommend this hotel, and will use it again.
