We had four nights here, as part of an 11 night stay in the Kvarner Gulf, flying with Ryanair from Stansted to Riejka. The flight from Stansted landed in perfect time for us to catch the Valbiska - Lopar ferry from Krk to Rab, saving us a long drive around the Gulf, and a 2 hour cruise to Rab made a relaxing start to our holiday. The car cost £220 with Car Del Mar, and we recommend this company: it was the cheapest, the car was good, we picked the cheapest insurance option, and we were not hit with any extra charges.
Rab Island is very pretty, but Rab Town is its jewel. Tamaris is on a little bay to the north west of Rab town, a 20 - 25 minute walk along the strand. The Pension stands alone overlooking a small marina. The views from sea facing rooms are enchanting, and the pension's environs are peaceful and quiet. At dusk the squeals of the alpine swifts slowly dissipate, and the bats start to fly past your balcony. The balcony of a room at the Tamaris is a lovely place to watch the sun set, while sipping a drink.
A highlight of our stay was swimming from the promenade which stretches from the Tamaris to Rab Town. There are shaded concrete benches, beneath fragrant woodland, to sit, dry off and read. The water is crystal clear, and there are numerous entry points to the sea. Rab Town itself, makes a picturesque backdrop. The coast is rocky, so to make the best of it, and to preserve your feet, buy some jelly shoes.
We also enjoyed swimming at a small hamlet called Gonar, near Supertarska Draga, where it is very quiet, but for a couple of bars.
Rab Town is an italianate medieval town, with a distinctive roofscape characterised by four campaniles. There are lots of decent restaurants, and it is delightful to wander the streets at any time. If you hit lucky, in the early evening, you may catch the nuns singing in St. Andrew's church.
The Tamaris is a friendly pension, clean and well run. Breakfasts are taken overlooking the marina, and are simple but enjoyable enough. We liked saving a few pieces of bread to feed the fish. Staff are very friendly. There is free parking, and room rates are very reasonable. We had free air conditioning, but regrettably, rooms do not have fridges. Be careful parking in Rab Town. There are not many spaces, and we got hit with a Kn700 fine for inadvertantly breaching parking rules. This was the only downer during our stay on Rab, which we are already looking back on with fondness.
