My family of 3 (myself, husband, and teenage daughter) toured Croatia in July 2011. Our stay in Rab was one of the highlights of the 15 day trip. I highly recommend the Astoria apartments for several reasons. The first is the location. It was right in the middle of a lovely, spirited and interesting part of the gorgeous island of Rab. I had been concerned that it would be noisy as this is a rather "jumping" spot that has a "resort" feel. But I will say that while our rooms were almost directly in the center of things, it was completely quiet and sound proof! The location was perfect for us. We drove to Rab on the car ferry. Note that it is somewhat tricky to reach the town itself once you find it with your car. We had to park in the outskirts and then my husband walked into the town (about 2 city blocks from the parking area) to find the hotel and find out where we were supposed to park. Once we were in and found parking, we were in great shape. During the day we drove to distant parts of the island and spent time on various beaches. In the evening after dinner my husband would go back to our room to rest and watch movies while my daughter and I explored the beautiful and well lit smooth cobble stone streets of the town. Also, don't miss this: on the opposite part of the main town of rab, about a 5-10 minute walk from the apartments, there is GREAT swimming, right off the edge of the town. There is not really a beach here, but sort of a prominade where sunbathers swim and soak up the sun. Bring a water proof camera because once you are in the water here, you will want to take photos of the architecture of Rab from the water. It's breathtaking. The Astoria hotel is a perfect place from which to explore all this. We stayed first in apartment 31 (gorgeous), and then moved to another room (we were trying to accommodate another family) that was not quite as nice. The rooms are clean and modern. The restaraunt had the best food we had had on our entire trip with delicious fresh seafood and reasonable (though not cheap) prices. The waiters were so friendly that I was actually sad to leave them! The restaurant/hotel manger was very nice and accommodating and gave us lots of tips on the area. Two things to be warned about; these are apartments and they expect you to bring your own toilet paper. Also, do NOT leave your room without your key, even if the rest of your family is going to remain in the room without you. The reason for this is that when the restaurant is not open you have to access your room from a pretty little cobblestone alley. This door is always kept locked. If you make the mistake I did and go exploring thinking you can mosey on back to your room without the key, think again! IN my case, I did not have a phone and had no way to tell my family who was inside the room to come to the main door downstairs and open it for me. I had to go to a bar where the bartender called the hotel owner, who was not in the building at the time, to come let me in! The owner was very nice about it and I was embarrassed that she had to drive back to let me in! The hotel has been in the same family for years. The married couple who own it and one of their sons were all there at different times during the day. The walls inside are decorated with paintings that the owner made herself. When we left, the owner gave us a bottle of home made red wine to take home with us. I would not hesitate to stay here again, and I loved having the variety to eat at the restuarant there or any of the other places, all in walking distance. One last thing; for history buffs, although there is great beauty and swimming on the island and plenty of gorgeous churches and buildings to explore, one thing I wanted to see that we were not able to find was a concentration camp that was on Rab during WWII. I was able to get a pamplet on this at one of the information booths, and I learned that there is a small monument at the location, but we were not able to find it.
