Having stayed in this hotel ten years ago, I returned to see nothing much had changed! As others have said, the hotel needs refurbishing, and this is planned for the future. I especially thought the restaurant chairs were worn, hard, and dirty. However, the hotel in general was clean, and the staff could not have been more helpful or professional. Our room on the 4th floor at the front was adequate with lovely views although there was some noise from the boats and the mainland. I would prefer this to having the noise and fumes from road traffic going past. The one night the disco was open I could certainly hear it even though the windows were closed. As our stay was on the last week that the hotel was open, it was not too busy, and the island was a quiet haven to walk around and enjoy different views and find a shady place to sit. If this hotel is refurbished to a high standard I think the star rating would go up- as would the prices as it is in a unique location. The food was plentiful and I am sure most people could find something they liked amongst the choice available.
I think the Croatians are welcoming, calm, and polite people. Porec feels safe. I did not see one cafe offering English breakfasts- which to my mind is a good thing, and I noticed the wines sold are mainly local.
Having been to on many holidays trying to find my ideal place, I think Porec fits the bill. There are boats and trips out, there are shops to browse, there are walks, there is swimming, good food and wine. The scenery is lovely and the original old buildings and streets are characterful and historical.
We took the trip to Venice through Thomsons and I thought it was a very expensive day out and we were bombarded with information on the outward journey.. We felt obliged to book the shuttle boat which would take us back from the town centre to the catamaran for the return journey (15 euros each) because I was worried we would not find the catamaran again as it was emphasized how busy Venice always is etc. We had bought a map on board also! I think we would have been able to walk back as there are plenty of road signs. It is a money making machine of a boat. Behind St Mark's Square the prices in the cafe's seemed normal and the home made ice cream was the best I have had for a couple of euros. My advice would be to carefully plan the day in Venice in order to make the most of the time there. Don't forget to take euros with you if you intend going. Personally, I preferred the quiet of Porec!
I would not go to Porec in the height of the summer heat and humidity, but off season it is my ideal holiday spot not too far away. I have stayed in Rovinj but prefer Porec.
