These comments are from a 50-something US couple. THe setting is magnificent and the experience of being able to spend some time in a UNESCO protected site is great; the place has not been spoiled ty tourists because everyone has to walk to get there so the masses that feel compelled to drive simply don't show up. You must park your car about 200 yards down from the inner courtyard of this medieval walled town. It would seem that the hotel has undergon various stages of remodeling with the most being centered around the pool and spa facilties, followed closely by the restaurant and breakfast area.. Yu can also eat outside. The hotel dinner was unremarkable although the service was pleasant even late in the evening and with an approaching storm. The breakfast buffet was more than adequate--but it is hard to believe they serve coffee from some kind of authomatic dispenser--reminded me of the cofee you get in the US while yoiu wait to egt your car serviced. Truly abominable!--and something so easy to fix! Be aware that not all rooms have A/C and you need to specifically ask for it when you reserve. We could have used it on our trip, especially since the windows facing the interior courtyeard barely open!! Also, the shutters could not be moved so the room is dark during the day. AT least our room was. I also think that any room facing the courtyard would be noisy as that is the focal point of all social activity. Rooms facing in other directions overlook rooftops and have stupendous views. There is also a rooftop patio on the 2nd floor accessible to all with geat views. We were there during a thrunderstorm--consideing there are areas in and around the hotel that give you a 180 degree vantage point, watching lighting strikes all around you was spectacular. There are some coffee shops and restaurants within 50 yards of the hotel which were filled, suggesting decent offerings. All in all, a great find. The local roads are in great shape. If you can, visit the town of Oprtalje, just several miles north on a very windy and scenic road--an untouristy autherntic jem with a frescoed church, cute old town and beautiful surroundings that look like Tuscany. Motovun also has a variety of adorable littleartisan shops.
