We originally booked to stay at the Palace a few doors down for 3 nights in April but got informed that the hotel was closed and our booking had been transferred to the Adriana (the same seems to have happened to the last few reviewers - wonder why they accept bookings when they're closed?)
Anyway, after a quick glance of the Adriana on the website, we saw it appeared to be a much 'fancier' hotel and as we got it for the same price, we weren't too bothered by the proposed move.
We arrived by car and drove around for some time before coming to the conclusion you must not be able to access the hotel by car, and so paid to park up somewhere and went to find the hotel.
It was pouring with rain, being 6 months pregnant I'd had a rather treacherous waddle with my rucksack across the slippery streets, but we were still excited about arriving at this super sounding spa hotel. Only to be greeted by a rather snappy receptionist who barked at me to just give me her name as she wasn't patient enough to wait 60 seconds for me to pull out my booking confirmation (which I was only reaching for as I couldn't remember whether I'd booked in mine or my partners name). She checked us in and after we asked, informed us we could park the car at the Pharos Hotel for free. We had to go back to get our suitcases (didn't want to lug them around whilst we were looking for the hotel), but there was no offer of any help, so my other half had to cart both suitcases back from the car, before returning to move the car up to the Pharos.
The hotel room was very small (not bothered, don't need much room) and on first sight appeared to have been decorated to a high standard, but we quickly got the impression it had been made to look fancy but done on the cheap, as many of the fixtures and fittings were loose or torn (e.g. bedside lamp was torn, hooks for towels/bathrobes were wobbly, reading light above bed was loose and had broken attachments). These aren't things you would necessarily report to reception and they hardly affected our stay, but we thought it was a poor reflection on the hotel that seemed to preach such high standards.
The clear glass shower cubicle is just weird. I mean we are of course a couple and are far from being prudes, but really, who wants to see each other taking a shower every day(?)
After settling in, I quickly read the hotels introduction and hotel rules of conduct, which included no wandering about the hotel in bathrobes & slippers. I found this a little odd given that it's a spa hotel (?). Reading the 'rules' made me feel slightly uneasy and not at all like I was in a comfortable hotel where I could relax and unwind. I mean I'm not into wandering about hotels half naked or behaving inappropriately, but just to state such rules in the rooms does not give a relaxed feeling. As it turned out, I booked a massage and was informed it was acceptable for me to turn up in my bathrobe and slippers, but I didn't feel comfortable doing, so I changed into these down in the spa anyway.
The spa and the pool was lovely. My therapist was very friendly and really helped ease some of my pregnancy aches (I was only allowed a basic massage with no aroma oils, and I appreciated the receptionist confirming this with the therapist before she would book me in - shows they were considering my condition and I felt I could trust them).
The pool is heated as they say, but I think most people probably think it isn't as the pool area is so very warm that the pool does feel very cold getting in. (To prove it's heated, just spend a few mins out on the balcony in your bathrobe on a cold April day then get in the pool - feels like a warm bath!)
The staff in the spa, bar and at breakfast were very nice, and the snappy receptionist did show us a smile after our initial disappointing check in. We did have help with our bags to the car on departure, which we appreciated. All in all, we ended up having a pleasant enough stay, but didn't feel terribly comfortable in this hotel (due to the slightly snooty impression it gives). I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it, other than for the location, and certainly wouldn't have paid the prices they advertise for it.
