“Can this place get any better?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2011

We stayed in Hvar for several days and The Palace is a great place to stay. Close to the center square, it has a patio for breakfast with an incredible view of the harbor.

If you have to have air conditioning, reconsider staying here. That is the only downfall if it happens to be really warm.

Otherwise, you can't beat this place for being in the heart of Hvar.

Room Tip: Get a room with a balcony, if possible.

“Past its prime”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

We were on a month-long tour of The Adriatic and Albania/Macedonia with Adventures Abroad and stayed here 2 nights. Our room was large with a tiny balcony overlooking the water. There was constant loud music from outside which was awful. Both he bathroom and room are in dire need of updating. We found the ceiling fan cooled the room but I would hate being there in the height of summer. Our group had dinner at the hotel the first night. The food was fine but be forewarned when ordering a glass of wine: the wine glass was small and we were charged an exorbitant amount. There is a grocery store about a block away where you can buy good Croatian wine at a reasonable price. The location of the hotel is superb, a walk up to the fortress a must. There is a picture of what the hotel looked like in its glory days behind the lobby desk. It is sad that the front of the hotel has been desecrated in the name of progress.

Room Tip: Don't be a solo traveler. One of the members of our group got a small room facing a wall

“Thumbs up from Ireland”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2011

We stayed in the Palace Hotel Hvar for 3 nights, at the beginning of October. Myself and my friend would overall, recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Hvar. Pros: 1) Great location – right in the heart of it all and within walking distance of everything! 2) Friendly staff 3) Very clean 4) Very safe 5) Nice pool area 6) Lovely outdoor terrace for breakfast/lunch/dinner with beautiful views of the marina 7) Not too bad price wise 8) Lovely looking hotel from the outside, architecturally. Cons: 1) We were originally booked in to 2 rooms which turned out to be right above the kitchen. The rooms themselves were very nice but we HAD to ask to be moved as they were stifling hot, even in Oct!!!! (there is zero air conditioning in the whole hotel) and this mixed with the smells coming from the kitchen underneath, was too overpowering. We couldn’t leave the windows open due to the smells from the kitchen (they weren’t bad smells, just too strong) and yet it was too warm in the room to keep them closed. However, we asked to be moved and we both were in the end, without too much hassle. 2) The hotel, in this day and age, should have an air conditioning system installed. I can’t imagine what it is like in the rooms in July & August! The ceiling fan just isn’t adequate. 3) They should have some sort of extractor installed in the kitchen as the strong smells coming from it waft around the hotel staircase, reception and some of the rooms, mostly at dinner time. 4) The rooms themselves are nice but the hotel corridors and staircases could do with a revamp as they are very shabby. All the carpets need to be replaced. 5) They should have a better, more efficient safe system in place for your valuables. So overall, a thumbs up from two single girls from Ireland. :-)

“Great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2011

We had a room overlooking the harbor and the Pakleni islands. The breakfest is good and view from the terrace is wonderful as well. The bar cost a little more than the others in the area. The rooms themselves are not small but they do need to be updated. There is no air conditioning but we didn't need as we went in September.

Room Tip: Ask to overlook the water.

“Hvar/Croatia - the new playground of the rich and famous”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2011

The location of the Palace Hotel on the island of Hvar is fabulous. The views are stunning - overlooking the harbour and other islands at the front and from the rear - stunning views up to the "Fortress".Our preferred option was to stay at the rear because past experience of the hotel has proven to be very noisy if staying at the front. We have been visiting Croatia for many years - when it was the former Yugoslavia - and we accept that the rooms in every hotel we have stayed in are basic. In the Palace there is no air conditioning and we were aware of that before we went. The rooms do have fans and in September these are quite adequate. The hotel and rooms are very tired looking - the shower rooms extremely small and in need of a thorough clean and overhaul. We were appalled to find that they allow dogs in the hotel - in the rooms - any of the rooms in the hotel - none are exempt from this. Which is not good when you are allergic to dogs as I am. (Ps none of the brochures mention this). Also smoking is allowed anywhere in the hotel ie restaurant, rooms anytime. The food is very basic and limited choice. Very heavily salted and covered in oil. It isn't as if the chef wasn't capable of preparing good food. The restaurant was open to the public and the food prepared at the table was of a very high standard. There were two nights when we were not allowed to eat on the terrace because they had other functions arranged. One of which went on until 4.00am the following morning. The brochures give this hotel a four rating - however officially it is three star. The staff are excellent - reception are very helpful. The first room offered to us was on the top floor. These are like attic rooms - cramped and hot. We didn't even open our suitcase and the next day they gave us a room on the 3rd floor - which we accepted. Not really a good start to a holiday but they resolved it. Our waiter in the restaurant was generally a guy called Grgo - very charming and amiable. Robert was also very helpful. Croatia is a beautiful country but the beaches are spoilt by the debris left by smokers. It is also now a very expensive place to visit - think twice before you drink anything, even water at your hotel. The supermarkets still offer good prices. We were in Croatia 7 years ago. A return taxi to the bay of Milna was £12.00 - it is now £26.00. If you like to celeb watch, there are the most amazing boats/yachts coming in to the harbour all the time.

Room Tip: Rooms on the 4th floor are cramped hot and claustrophobic. Rooms at the rear of the hotel are quite...
