Having stayed at other Banyan Trees (Ringha, Phuket), my expectations at Lijiang were for a boutique style hotel with exclusivity and seclusion. The setting of Banyan Tree Lijiang was quite stunning and the garden jacuzzi suite was divine to enjoy the night sky, crisp cool air and views of snow mountain. Rooms were beautifully decorated with delicious varieties of complimentary snacks, teas and fruit. The suite was spacious, the garden lovely, and the jacuzzi a taste of delight on my third trip to Lijiang since 2000. Each time has been distinctly different as Lijiang's tourism star has risen and the old naxi residents have moved out of the town center with shops replacing daily life. Lijiang is definitely a tourist spot now with everything catering to outsiders hungry for a taste of the famed local handicrafts, food and experiences.
What did not fit the resort were the promotional posters for the Banyan Tree Private Collection taped on the glass in multiple spots, and the presence of tour books at almost every entrance to the lobby, restaurants, etc. The lobby was mostly busy, full of people coming and going with the feeling of 'tour group' central. The hotel is located 10 minutes by foot from ShuHe, an old historic town that has been largely built in the last 10 years except for one original street and bridge. With Lijiang being so touristy, perhaps the flow of crowds cannot be avoided.
Spa treatment was good as expected, in a beautifully designed spa. The gym was small but functional with at least one treadmill, stair climber, stretching mat, some weights. Restaurants were respectable overlooking water on all sides.
As a Banyan Tree, I expected a more exclusive and intimate crowd. Otherwise, still very good, but not quite 'WOW' because of the little details.
