“The place to stay in downtown Birmingham”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

This is a very nice, recently-restored 1913-era hotel Although it is a Hampton, it is far nicer, both in terms of accomodations and services, than the average Hampton Inn. The staff couldn't be nicer and the food at the restaurant is pretty good. As far as its location, you're only a block or two from the Courthouses and City Hall. Parking is valet, but off-site. The hotel provides a van to transport guests to the finer dining restaurants in the downtown area. I've stayed here 6 or 7 times over the past few years and have enjoyed my visit every time.

“Comfortable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

The Hampton- Tutwiler is downtown Birmingham and can be a bit difficult to find on the grid. It is in a good location for business in the heart of downtown. It's relatively close to 5 Points and several of Birmingham's great restaurants. They have a shuttle that runs until 10 p.m.
The rooms are comfortable and clean. The bathroom is small- did not have a tub.
The staff was friendly upon arrival but I needed an iphone charger- normally there is a concierge in this type hotel or a hospitality desk that has extra chargers for use. They don't. When asked about the charger & other general questions about the area, they were unhelpful. The restaurant and bar are only open until 10p.m. I am giving it an "average" because it has gone down hill since it has changed ownership.

Room Tip: If you want a tub-shower, ask specifically.

“Wonderful location, charming historic hotel with great restaruant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

This is a well-kept, up-to-date historic building in the heart of downtown Birmingham. Now part of the Hampton Inn chain, it meets all of their standards and then some. I stay here several times a year for business. It has a great bar with less expensive bar food--hamburgers, etc (all really way above average) and a high end local restaurant with good room service. It has the standard HI room decor, fitness center, business center, free wi-fi and free standard HI breakfast. The site does not have a parking lot, but does have valet parking for a fee (c.12-13$). A nearby city deck is cheaper, but a little less convenient. A shuttle van will take you to nearby places. Staff is friendly and very helpful! On a recent visit I had left my suitcase at home and was provided with free toiletry basics and good info on where to get other needed items. Exceptional staff. Every experience has been very good. Only reason not has 5 stars is it used to be a 5 star hotel, Hampton Inns are good, solid places, but do not rise to 5 star levels. Stay here! You won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: corner suites have more of the historic personality; high end rooms more so.

“You would never know its a Hampton Inn”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 December 2011

This is a historic hotel that is charming. You would never know it was a Hampton Inn. The Century restaurant serves some very good food but the service is horrible. Very pleasant hotel staff and the complimentary breakfast on the 8th floor is an added treat.

“Beautiful Hotel, Disappointing Staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2011

My family of 4 (me, hubby, 19yr old daughter, 15 yr old son) drove to Birmingham for a wedding. Most of the overnight guests attending the wedding booked at the Redmont Hotel near the reception. I'm almost always leery of local hotels, so when I found out there's a Hampton Inn (which is of the Hilton family) a couple of blocks away, I decided you can't go wrong with a familiar brand - WRONG.

The Bad:
- The front desk staff during our afternoon check-in had no personality whatever – what happened to Southern Hospitality?
- Extra shampoo/conditioner and 2 pillows took a combination of a phone call to the front desk, unanswered calls to the front desk, a trip to the front desk, and 3 trips by a man to deliver shampoo, conditioner and the pillows, totaling 1 hour.
- We did not get our 6:10AM wake up call. We were an hour late leaving Birmingham and missed breakfast. Notifying the front desk did not really pan out to much. There were 2 people at the desk, a man and a woman, when I told them what happened, the man asked me for the room number and after I gave it to him, he disappeared through curtains to the back….. uh, where’d you go? Probably to tell housekeeping we’re leaving!
- Although the hotel is beautifully restored, the carpeting is horrible. There were a lot of lumps and bumps in hallways and our room. I tripped twice.

The Good:
-The hotel is historic and beautifully restored
- The Century Restaurant/Bar – we had a very nice lunch here, plus room service for appetizer and drinks at night. The food was excellent, had a lot of selection, and the drinks were reasonably priced ($3.75 for a Mich Ultra)
