My family of 4 (me, hubby, 19yr old daughter, 15 yr old son) drove to Birmingham for a wedding. Most of the overnight guests attending the wedding booked at the Redmont Hotel near the reception. I'm almost always leery of local hotels, so when I found out there's a Hampton Inn (which is of the Hilton family) a couple of blocks away, I decided you can't go wrong with a familiar brand - WRONG.
The Bad:
- The front desk staff during our afternoon check-in had no personality whatever – what happened to Southern Hospitality?
- Extra shampoo/conditioner and 2 pillows took a combination of a phone call to the front desk, unanswered calls to the front desk, a trip to the front desk, and 3 trips by a man to deliver shampoo, conditioner and the pillows, totaling 1 hour.
- We did not get our 6:10AM wake up call. We were an hour late leaving Birmingham and missed breakfast. Notifying the front desk did not really pan out to much. There were 2 people at the desk, a man and a woman, when I told them what happened, the man asked me for the room number and after I gave it to him, he disappeared through curtains to the back….. uh, where’d you go? Probably to tell housekeeping we’re leaving!
- Although the hotel is beautifully restored, the carpeting is horrible. There were a lot of lumps and bumps in hallways and our room. I tripped twice.
The Good:
-The hotel is historic and beautifully restored
- The Century Restaurant/Bar – we had a very nice lunch here, plus room service for appetizer and drinks at night. The food was excellent, had a lot of selection, and the drinks were reasonably priced ($3.75 for a Mich Ultra)
