“It is ok and you can't expect too much on the hotels in the mountain.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2011

It is ok and you can't expect too much on the hotels in the mountain.

You can't expect too much on hotels in Mount Huang. Xihai Hotel is located in the West Sea Scenic Area. It takes 15 minutes walk to a peak for watching the sunrise. It is very tiring after you reach the peak. To be very honest, the place for sunrise watching is not that perfect, because there are many trees in front and part of your view is blocked by Brighten Summit as well. It seems that in Mount Huang, the best place for sunrise watching is Brighten Summit.

We stayed in a standard double-bedded room, whose standard is only equal to a 2.5-3 star hotel in downtown. But when thinked about the height and dangerousness of Mount Huang, and all the foods was carried there by the workers, it is easy to accept those conditions. The buffet dinner costs 150 RMB per person; breakfast costs 80 RMB per person, if you don't join a tour group. There are not many choices, most of which are dishes in northern China. Thus we took bread and instant noodles up by ourselves.

Two down jackets are in the wardrobe, provided by the hotel, so that we don't need to take many clothes with you. It also has an electric kettle, tea bags, instant coffee and heater in the room, as well as other facilities.

They provide foot massage service. The staff would come to your room and it costs 150 RMB per person, only for foot and calf. If you want the one for your thigh and the whole body, you need to pay more. However, the hot water they used was cooked from the small electric kettle in the room. Thus it was just warm when it reaches a certain amount.

“Motel 6 for a 5-star price...”

... though Motel 6 is CLEAN.
Stayed at Xihai Hotel for one night, but that was sufficient. The building resembled barracks made of 2x4s and plywood rather than a solid building (I don't dare imagining it in winter). Room small, very old, furniture very used, bathtub and sink hadn't been scrubbed for a long time (we tried with the tooth brush provided, hihi). The quality of the accommodation didn't surprise us, given most earlier reviews, but the Baiyun Hotel shows that it doesn't need to be that way, even if prices are the same everywhere.
The restaurant had very decent food (though overpriced, but then, everything is carried up the mountain on the shoulders of people), we had some yummy hare there.

“Best avoided”

While I understand how difficult it is to build and maintain a hotel at the top of the mountain, this hotel is barely acceptable. It is very overpriced for what it offers and the maintenance is abysmal. Some of the rooms have a wonderful view of the mountain, some of the rooms have a view of a rotting and mildewed wall. When you book, you have no idea which one you'll get. The rooms all smell of smoke and mold and the bathroom fixtures are dirty and, in our case, falling apart.

“Good Location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 April 2009

We originally booked a 4 bed dorm through elong for the Xihai Hotel, but were told by an agent in Tunxi that only a 6 bed room was available and we would need to pay for all beds. So we cancelled and went up the mountain without a booking and ended up staying at the Xihai Villa (opposite the Xihai hotel but same group). We got a triple (a twin with extra bed) for 1090 Rmb. To their credit, elong later contacted me and said we could stay in the Xihai hotel for the original price, but by then we had already checked into the Xihai Villas.

Good points- location - fairly close to the Taiping cable car. Fairly clean and comfortable. Lots of hot water.Room heater. Internet connection.

Bad points. Room we had was noisy. Lost of tour groups stay there, and they head up to see the sunrise at 4 am. Expect to be woken when they leave, when they come back , and when they go for breakfast. However, this might be the same with all hotels! Expense for what you get - ditto the same for all hotels. Food - ok but expensive for what you get. Smoking - most of the mountain is a non smoking zone. This means the lobby is a smoking zone!

If you are going at a weekend / holiday - book in advance. If you can get a cheap room by booking do so. If the price is 800 Rmb for a simple double (no view) and you are going on a week day, then wait till you get there.Maybe you can get a better price /room.

“Keep in Mind You're 2000m Up”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 March 2009

Huangshan is one of the few famous mountains in China to have actual hotels at its peak. One must keep that in mind when booking. The 4 stars really only reflect the overpriced restaurant and private event facilities. The rooms are very simple, but are okay for a night. If you want luxury, I wouldn't stay overnight on the peak and go straight to the nice resort hotels at the base near the hotsprings.
We were able to get a very good discount by booking this hotel and the Best Western Hotspring Hotel at the base together through CITS ([-])
