“Decent amount of money for no heat”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 December 2011

You are paying a premium to stay on top of the mountain, but there are advantages beside being able to see the sunset. Because of the operational times of the cable car, the mountain is a lot more quiet before the start of the tram and about a hour before the close of the tram.

The hotel is nothing special. It is small, and the bathroom have no doors. They do not provide complementary bottled water or facial tissue. There is no minibar, but what is worse is there is no heat. If you go in the winter time, you are expected to keep warm by wearing the down jackets they provide.

The restaurant only have one table that sits four. All the rest are table of 10 set up for tour groups. You can however go to the buffet restaurant which have more smaller tables but the food is not as good.

“Ok for a nights sleep...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2011

We were advised in advance that all hotels on Mt Huangshan were nothing special and overpriced, so didn't expect too much except for a bed to sleep in at Shilin.
Firstly, Shilin's location is great - about 30-40 min walk from the top of the cable car, but also very close to the best spots for viewing the sunrise.
Our room was a bit faded and tired, very small, with a view of another wall of the building about a meter away(!:). It did however supply a down jacket which was nice for our evening wander.

Lots of tour groups stay at the hotel, and although there appeared to be plenty of tables, the frazzled manager of the chinese a la carte restaurant had difficulty coping with the logistics of seating two of us. Luckily he had sweet Young waitresses who did their best to get us seated and fed. Food was ok but nothing special. Infact the best meal was breakfast the next morning (additional to 980 yuan room rate) - a buffet breakfast which set us up well for the long walk down.

“Very basic accom for a high price”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 June 2011

I wanted to spend a night at the tomp of the mountain, and decided to go for the Shilin Hotel. I apid RMB 200 for a dorm room. The room had 5 bunk beds, and a small bathroom, kettle and tv. Very spartan. I was lucky to be the first person to arrive, so I had a chance to have a shower after my climb, which was nice. There wasn't a lot of privacy if there was someone else in the room.
I had dinner in the hotel restaurant. THe staff seemed completely perplexed that someone might come on their own, and order from the menu, so it took around 30 mins to get a bowl of average noodle. Everyone woke up around 4.30 to see the sunrise (which was ok). I tried to go back to bed to sleep for a few hours after this, but people were coming and going and chatting and packing, oblivious that it was still around 6am. Personall,y if I came back to Huangshan, I'd get an early cablecar (Yungu), spend all day walking around the top, then come back in the evening and not bother with the crap mountain top hotels.

The front desk staff were very helpful and polite.

“Don't expect too much”

Staying overnight on the Yellow Mountain is a must if you want to have a few quiet hours away from the noisy crowds that swarm the mountain. Therefore you must compromise on the quality of the hotel. I assume that this hotel is as good as the others. Because of the scarcity of hotels on the summit they do not have to go out of their way to provide good service, they will always find customers.
It was cold on the mount and they heating of the room was not sufficient
An amazing feature of the room - there is no door to the toilet

“Do not use the massage service at this hotel!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2010

Upon entering this hotel, myself and other members of our group were handed massage vouchers. I visit China frequently and have enjoyed massages on many occasions, but not at this hotel as it was my first visit. My massage ended after 25 mins (advertised as 45 mins for 140 yuen). I paid, and was then asked for a tip, which I refused. I also found that several male members of our group were inappropriately touched by the masseurs who then demanded 800 yuen for "special services". Some of our people paid, because they were embarrassed and did not want any trouble. These "masseurs" are sleazy cheats. I will never go back to this hotel again.
