We got to La Serena at 5pm one evening on our trip and had no reservations yet, but in April the entire strip of hotels along the ocean were nearly completely empty so getting a room was not a problem. We walked in and negotiated a decrease in the rate for the evening.
The hotel was nothing special at all, but it was close to the beach so we could take a long walk along the beach as the sun was setting.
There weren't many places that looked enticing for dinner, but we managed to find an HiperLider grocery store five minutes away by car. Aside from just being a really interesting cultural experience to see this grocery store, it was a good way to stock up on fruit and food to snack on. While not exactly a gourmet meal, it was fine to sit on our balcony, drink pisco, eat oranges, and enjoy the nice evening.
It was kind of strange that there were so few people in this area just one month after high season. Honestly, this hotel is absolutely nothing special but it's fine for a place to sleep at night.
