The Tulip Inn is located on Rua Jose Maria Lisboa 1/2 block off Rua Pampalona in the heart of Sao Pulo´s wonderful Jardins neighborhood. Great shpping and restaurants abound in the area including several well regarded Pizzarias. Internet access abounds in the neighborhood during the week. Access is more spotty on the weekends.
The Tulip Inn is Golden Tulip´s discount entry into the Jardins market. It doesn´t compare in terms of amenties with those of its sister Golden Tulip Hotel the Paulista Plaza. But, its daily rate is substantially cheaper than that of the Paulista Plaza. On my trip, the Paulista Plaza cost around $80 per night while the Tulip Inn cost around $42 per night.
In comparison, the room was probably 75% of the size of the rooms at Paulista Plaza. Both had TVs with full cable. The Paulista Plaza had a room stereo which the Tulip Inn did not. Not a deal breaker for me as a traveler
The Paulista Plaza had a full bath with a soaking tub while the Tulip Inn had only a (very nice) marble tiled shower stall. I will note that the Tulip Inn´s shower had an incredible soaker shower head that was an absolute dream to jump under every morning.
Both the Tulip Inn and the Paulista Plaza require the guest to use his room key to operate the electricity in the room. The hallways of the Paulista Plaza are always lighted while the hallways of the Tulip Inn operate lights on movement sensors. Again, no dealbreaker here. But, sonme may be uncomfortable with that.
The Paulista Plaza offers a great restaurant and phenomenal breakfast while the Tulip Inn ofers a more scaled down though quite sufficient breakfast in the mornings. In as much as there were so many good restaurants nearby, I didn´t partake of any meals other than breakfast at the Tulip Inn.
The neighborhood around the tulip Inn is truly that, a neighborhood. There you will have the chance to live as Paulistas who are fortunate enough to live here do daily. It is no tourist trap. There is a small, friendly grocery next to the hotel where you can buy bottled water and snacks at very reasonable prices.
The Paulista Plaza offers a full gym with sauna and steam room as well as a pool. The Tulip Inn offers an open solarium on its roof for sunning. But, it doesn´t have a pool or exercise room.
The staff at Paulista Plaza was multi-lingual and very helpful. With the staff at the Tulip Inn, we struggled between my broken Portugese and their broken English. But, we always managed to communicate what we needed to. The staff at the Tulip Inn was very helpful and seemed quite interested in learning about me and where I was from.
The Bed at the Tulip Inn wasn´t nearly as comfortable as that at the Paulista Plaza (which was luxurious). But, it was sufficient and comfortable enough to accomodate a good night´s sleep. The maid service was excellent and efficient.
I will have no qualms staying at the Tulip Inn in the future. In my opinion, its strengths are:
Price
Great Neighborhood
Good Shopping and Restaurants Nearby
