“clean but no more than that”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2011

The hotel staff was friendly, but spoke no English. The rooms smelled (I tried three), the furniture is from the 'fifties, the bathroom molded, the airconditioning noisy, the heating absent. So what is OK? The bedsheets are clean and the bed not uncomfortable. But that is about it. The location is nothing special either. it is probably OK if you need nothing more than an oldish looking, bland but clean room with a shower. If you demand more, do not go here.

Room Tip: there isn't any

“Good place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2011

I stayed at the Mercure for over 2 weeks and had a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The service in the restaurant is excellent. Food was pretty good especially the deserts.

The rooms/apartments were well-equipped and spacious enough. A decent-sized fridge containing the mini bar and a microwave oven were hidden behind a wooden screen which kept things looking neat and tidy.

The wireless internet was free but the speed was not great. Ok for email and browsing but not fast enough for video streaming. You could pay for high-speed access, which I did once, but this was not much of an improvement.

The double-bed was large and very comfortable. You can hear the traffic outside but I think this would be the same at any hotel in Sao Paulo.

Bathroom was good and contained a powerful shower.

The room had a large lcd tv which had some English language film channels. One of which showed old films which I thought was great.

Ordering room service by telephone was a bit of a pain if you couldn't speak Portugese as the people in the restaurant could not speak English. I got around this by calling at reception where there was usually an English speaking employee. Marina was particularly helpful.

“I was expecting more”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2011

The service is ok - check in and check out were swift. I didn't need anything else (like room service) so I can't really rate. The thing that disappointed me the most was the room itself - certainly not Mercure standard. The size of room is ok but a wall divides the living room from the sleeping area so it gives the impression that it is smaller. The TV is so old and small I am glad I didn't need it. How about some flat screen? The bathroom was not in good conditions - some hair on the floor the ceiling gave me the impression I was on a cheap hotel. And be warned: the Oscar Freire Station is in the map but it is not ready.

“Comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2011

Very comfortable hotel, in a place within a walking distance (<2km) to the Vila Madalena night bars or to the Oscar Freire st. We enjoyed a wonderful discount to stay there for a weekend -- but, even though we made the reservation 2 months in advance, we were given a smoking room. And they said it was full (!!), so we couldnt change to another room. That's the only bad thing to tell.

“It's just okay!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 July 2011

This was my third stay and on each trip I find the staff to be friendly and cooperative, although sometimes a bit difficult to communicate with as a good majority of them speak little English and my Portugues in almost non existent, fortunately my Spanish helps with the understanding.
WIFI was available and at no charge, this is very positive. As far as TV quality is concerned, it is not one of my top priorities, so I can not add any comments.
The breakfast buffet is acceptable and reasonable in price. I have also dined in the evening and find the food to be quite acceptable if one has to dine in.
One could say this hotel is showing some signs of age or overuse; the lifts are quite slow and prone to breakdown, the rooms are looking a bit long in the tooth. Whilst they are clean, they smell very stale and dusty, a good hoovering would be in order and some fresh ventilation might help.
The quality of sleep aspect in my mind is not very good. Sound isolation does not seem to exist. The is noise eminating from outdoors as well as indoors; truck noise in the early morning hours and late night noise from the flats behind the hotel. To top it off the sevice staff seem to find a need to be banging doors and opening and closing hallway linen closets at strange hours of the evening and early morning and that coupled with them talking in loud voices makes it somewhat difficult to get a good night sleep. Had it happened only once I would have let it pass, but it has happened multiple times.
So, will I stay again, a good possibility due to location, but I do hope management has a look at this posting and takes corrective action where possible.

Room Tip: Try to get a room that is facing the flats to the rear of the hotel, and aske for a room that is awa...
