You will definitely hear a lot of rumours and gossip when visiting a place like Rio - a vibrant city filled with culture and soul, but has its history of safety issues and such. Overall we felt it to be a very safe place to visit - you just need to use your common sense.
First off, Santa Teresa is one of the cutest neighbourhoods in the city and we really enjoyed staying there. It was safe to walk around, had lots of cute little shops, and great food (and the best acai place). We found it easy to get to the city or sights during the day, but the challenge does lie that sometimes it's a bit harder to get back at night (some cabs refuse, so you just have to keep asking), or if you are trying to leave Santa Teresa at night, sometimes it's hard to catch a cab down into the city. We were the type to leave in the morning and stay out until we were ready for bed so we didn't have too much trouble. Lance/Dave give you a business card with directions for the cabs to find the place, and most of them even if they didn't really know exactly where it was, was able to find it no problem. You just have to expect it's not as common of a place for cabs like "Copacabana" or something.
The house is clean and fairly comfortable with lots of space and very safe to leave your things. You need to bring your own toiletries, and because it is up in the mountains, you have to understand it takes a little while for the hot water to arrive in the shower. Also, because it's next to a natural rainforest, there's a few bugs and mosquitoes you just need to be aware of (with the windows and such at night). The breakfast was delicious, and Brazil's fruit is just amazing so I can't see how the food won't be amazing. There's the bread and pastries and fruit, and then you can order eggs/omelettes. The coffee and juice are delicious! There's plenty of time for breakfast, as it's available from 8-10:30 (? I think, I can't remember exactly anymore) so you can choose to get up early or sleep in a bit from staying up late. One morning we wanted to leave a little bit earlier and they were super accommodating with us sneaking in a bite a few minutes earlier than usual.
I think the best part about staying there was how helpful Lance/Dave were when it came to planning your day. They are always available in the morning to help you get to your destination and give wonderful suggestions. It's nice because they speak English, and although Rio is tourist-friendly, most have limited English and we had limited Portuguese. They lend you maps and books and it's great to have a local opinion on places you will visit. All their staff are very friendly and helpful.
They offer to hire airport pickup to and from - and we totally recommend doing this. I couldn't really imagine trying to explain on arrival how to get there to the cabs and it makes things smooth and convenient. Lance/Dave taste in food is also great - so make sure you ask them for recommendations if you are foodies. If you're also interested in art, make sure you chat with them for info on the local artists.
