We blindly booked this place because most hostels were booked and someone told us to call here. When we first arrived, we had opted for the largest dorm..it was their cheapest room, but really about the same price as other hostels. When I saw the room I thought I had walked into a human trafficking operation. Bunk beds stacked 3 high, and any free space on the floor was filled with torn mattresses. So, we paid 10 R more for an 8 bed room. It was so cramped that people would have to leave the room for someone else to come in and get their things. Half the lockers were missing keys, so they told us to leave all valuables (in their words, if it has any meaning to you whatsoever, leave it in our safe at the front desk). Well, in the day we were at this hostel, we saw probably 6 people at the front desk, many of which told us they had only worked there for a couple of weeks. All of these people have access to the safe, and when you ask for say, 'a black wallet' they just hold up every black wallet in there and ask you to pick yours. So of course, when my friend got her black wallet back, it was missing 200 R.

As everyone else mentioned, showers are cold, there was 1 outlet in the room for 8 people, bathrooms were disgusting, and it's the lowest quality hostel I've ever stayed in.

I have stayed in this hostel twice now and I cannot recommend it enough. It is not the prettiest hostel in the world but it is certainly the most fun! The vibe is amazing the staff are great, they can offer you so many trips plus is only a short walk from copacabana beach and a couple of fun clubs. The bar staff take you to the most fun 'favela funk' party which is a must as well as football games at the maracana - the minibus journey there is just as good - singing and some hair-raising driving!! I did a 10 month round the world trip and of all the many hostel I stayed in this is by far the best for good times and great people :-) ps. the pillows are horrible id recommend bringing one!!

OMG! Why in earth did I pick this place. First of all the location is horrible and its located in this weird side street. I got lost several times and when I would ask people around the area for directions;they never heard of "mellow yellow" hostel. PLEASE AT ALL COST STAY AWAY. YOU ARE BETTER OFF STAYING AT THE BEACH AND SLEEPING WITH THE BUMS. Everything in the hostel in falling apart. There's no AC, no elevator (fyi. there's about 50 flights of stairs) and no staff. Lots of shady people stay here so please be very careful. In conclusion the experience I had with this place made me want to cry. BTW it's too expensive for the quality of room you will be staying; we should be allowed to stay for free.
