Stayed here many times, thankfully not when the renovations occurred and the facade collapsed, two workers killed I believe. Rooms clean and big, try to get one facing the street. Fabrizio the front desk manager speaks english and will go out of his way to help you. All staff freindly and attentive. Walked all the hotels in copa, this is the best you will find for the price. Room service ok, drinks not overpriced, safe and fast internet for banking etc. Took time to write this review in appreciation of the services provided.

Hotel Canada is in a pretty convenient location about two blocks away from Copacabana beach. The staff is friendly enough...we had to wait awhile at the reception desk to check in but it wasn't a big deal. The rooms are a little dated but no worries...we spent most of our time on the beach anyway. There are a bunch of drugstores and restaurants around so everything is at your fingertips. If you bring your laptop you can get wireless internet for R$20. Our room was facing the street which gets a little noisy but it wasn't much of a problem. Overall, a nice place to stay while in Rio.

I stayed at the Grande Hotel Canada for 7 nights and thought that the A/C room was excellent value for money. I negotiated the price down to about 2/3 of the asking price (from memory). This hotel is located 1 street back from the beach with a supermarket, ATM, bus stop and subway station all nearby.

The A/C room and bathroom were clean, the bed comfortable, most of the staff spoke English and were obliging and friendly. However, the breakfast was faily average, for a 3 star, although I have had much worse.

All in all, a conveniently located, great place to stay in Rio.
