“Alcatraz of Copacabana”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

I spent only one night at this hotel and felt as I slept in cell of Alcatraz.

I was there on May 30 - 31, 2010

I choose this place because of great location - extremly close to Copacabana Beach - and reserved room by Internet. I trusted the hotel's web site and it was my crucial mistake.

I planned to stay there for three days, but luckily I paid only one night on my check-in. I decided to pay the rest when I check - out.

I say again, luckily.

Althought I arrived there about 5. p.m when I entered my room it seems as it is deep night. I asked hotel boy is there any window there and he showed me. It looked in vertical and fully dark space limited by windows of other rooms. I felt as I am looking on elevator track. He told me it is not possible to open the window explaining to me that air condition - extremly loud machine in the room - will compensate " fresh air" ?

I was shocked.

From one side it was better I could not open window because of bad smells, on other side it created claustorphobic atmosphere of prison cell.

No daily light, no fresh air, small space, old wooden table with two chairs and bad artificial light. An ideal place for depressed person with suicidal tendency. No better location to ended the miserable life.

It also associates me on brooms storage place rather than hotel room on Copacabana....

The safe box was not useful because it was not possible lock it.

The only good thing was free wi-fi, so I had chance to make online reservation in another hotel.

But before I definitely decided to leave this horror in the morning, I asked receptionist to show me another room complaining on my " prison cell".

He showed me bigger, double-bed room with the view on the street on higher rate but I rejected that option giving him on mind that guest certainly deserves better room for the same price if he didn't get what he paid.

Unfortunately, they had no sense for my complaints.

I had hard night. I could not sleep because of lacking the fresh air that intensified my inner felling of claustrohobia. I had to go under shower to accelerate my circulation in brain and body and find way to reduce the tension I felt due to lack of oxygen.

After breakfast - it was O. K - I packed my bags and left the room, previously making online reservation in hotel " Debret" that is more close to Copacabana Beach and certainly better than this one.

The receptionist was surprised why I am leaving but she did not try to give me some alternative option, so I concluded they were not interested to keep me as a guest, not respecting neither my needs nor my money.

I don't recommend this to anyone and my advice for all travelers : be carefully when you consult hotel's web site.

Hotel reviews are much valid and they may be very helpful for making of your final decision. I must admit I did not consult Trip Advisor or similar web site so I went through all of this I described above.

“An ordinary hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

Ipanema is, by far, the most pleasant neighborhood in Rio. However, since Carnival is about to start (I was there in February), hotels are full and their rates are outrageous. Copacabana Rio, a hotel with more affordable rates, is located in the border between Copacabana and Ipanema, so staying in it is a compromise solution between price and location.

As for its features, there is nothing more than the ordinary: breakfast is good; service and cleanliness are standard.

Some things, however, could be better: the bed in the single room is a bit small; air conditioned is quite noisy and unbalanced - too hot or too cold.

Excellent location, situated on a street parallel to Copacabana Beach.
Clean room, in the lobby they have free internet desktop computer,
Reasonable breakfast.
The flow of water in the shower very weak.
Anyone looking for a good location and clean rooms - then this is the place for him
We were three nights last week of November 2011.

We paid $ 160 U.S. per night

“You Have To Know Rio”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2011

I have been to Rio so many times. The hotels have become quite expensive over the last 2-3 years. Even the 5 star hotels are not that nice. But they are truly and horribly expensive, especially the ones facing the beach.
This hotel is a simple tourist type hotel in the range of 3-4 stars and is RIGHT ON THE BEACH. Its location could not be better. Behind the hotel (as with all the hotels) are the avenues full of eateries and shops and stores. The closest mall (RIO MALL) to any of the hotels is about 1-2 miles away and a quick taxi ride.
Rooms are average and as well maintained as an older hotel can be. Being right on the beach does not help with the age of a building no matter where it is located. Hotel has a nice pool and gym on the top floor and good security in the lobby and at the elevators to make sure no one goes up to the rooms unless they are supposed to.
So if you are going to Rio, please keep in mind that unless you plan to pay a huge sum of money for a big name hotel on the beach, keeping with some of the lesser known ones such as this hotel can save you some $$$.

“I do not recomend that hotel at all!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

In some points, here are my critics:
- Not clean at all: I found hair in the toilets and bed,
- Smelly from the old furnitures and the kitchen (do not open the window, if you stay in the back)
- Poor service from all the employees, not kind, educated or profissional!!
- When we ask a taxi to the bellboy, he charges us more than the double of the normal price
- Room has no light, too small, the shower stay full of water during the bath!
