“#1 of WORST HOTELS WORLDWIDE”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2011

First time visit to Rio and thanks to this experience, it will be the last. I have to agree to other comments here about staff. They are all naturally unpolite, however I will not blame them but the management. Hotel charged me $720 (dollars not reals) per night in a non-refundable booking. I left 15 minutes later anyway and paid another hotel. Clerk offered me a beautiful suite on the top floor where my shock started when I saw all the roof had been taken off. View from everywhere in the room was awful. I will try to upload images. The greasy smell throughout the property provoked vomiting. The worst was the sense of unsafety. I am so happy now I took the decision of running away from this place.

Room Tip: Stay at a true recognized five-star or more brand.

“Nothing more than average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2011

The location is good, some places to eat near the hotel, good options for transportation.

“Nice place.. close to copacabana beach and safe place”

hotel is nice.. neat and clean. the support staff is really friendly and understanding and helpful. since i was here more for business i didnt use much of the facilities of the hotel but did have a look and do recommend to travellers. just be sure of the room you book because a single person room is really a small dingy room (you enter and its over). overall nice and recommended for budgeted travellers.

“Exquisitely unpleasant”

I have travelled all over the world in the last decade, and I would have to say that this hotel sets a new standard in unpleasantness. I can only conclude that the staff, especially those working at the reception desk, undergo special training in treating customers with unrelenting, sneering disdain. To describe the staff as impolite would be a gross understatement - rather, try to picture a demeanour of barely-suppressed rage provoked by the inconvenience of having to receive a client at the reception desk at the late hour of 2200h. I booked 3 nights, prepaid, but left after one day and forfeited the money paid rather than stay a moment longer. The room (or rather, cubicle) was dark, airless and musty.

“Awesome location looking out over Copacabana”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 June 2011

We stayed at Hotel Astoria for two nights after staying in two other hotels previously in Rio. The Astoria was by far the best hotel we stayed in during our stay in Rio and represented great value for money. Swimming pool looks right over Copacabana beach with the beach just across the road.
