I spent a week at the Hotel Miramar Palace, where the US Embassy used to house its foreign service officers and diplomats, and where Pan Am used to house its pilots and flight attendants. Our flight out of town was delayed, so the airline rushed us to the Hotel Gloria, the Grand Old Lady of Rio hotels, where the Emperor of Brazil and Einstein stayed in days gone by. The hotel is covered in antiques and has more rosewood decorations and floors than a Cabo Rico yacht. I loved every minute of my stay and will return there next time I am in Rio. The rooms are wonderful exampled of bygone imperial luxury that must be appreciated. If you are the sort of traveler who should not leave the United States in the first place, do not stay here. The experience will be wasted on you. But if you seek a unique hotel with all of the necessities, this is the place to be IF you do not mind being a few miles from the beach. It is located near the business district, a few minutes taxi ride or car rental ride from Copacabana, Arpoador, Ipanema, and Leblon beaches. Old world charm at its finest. Not for the ignorant.
