“Stay clear of this place.”

Arrived at around 5.30am. Went to check in and told we would have to pay for another night, so we said in that case we'll leave our bags and come back after 2pm. At that point the bloke on the desk gave us a key and said you can have the room now, we assuming that they had relented and given us the room as a good bit of customer service, since it was empty. Worth noting that everywhere else we stayed in Brazil no additional charge had been made for an early check in.

The room (a delux) itself was nice, if a little dated and had a front view across to the Sugar Loaf. We has booked through Impanima.com and had specified a room in the main building not the anex, and this may explain the difference between the quality of room we had and what others have written about the hotel.

The genaral decor was dated, this hotels public areas have none of the charm of an early 20th century grand hotel, nor a modern contemporary style. Late 1980's would best describe its decor.

On the plus side the staff were attentive and courteos (with a couple on notetable exceptions, see below), and the breakfast and dinner (buffet) were also very good.

Upon check out they wanted to charge for an extra night as we had the room early. I rejected this having clearly stated the the chexk in clerk that if we were to be chargde then we would wait. The cashier then went off and spoke to somebody, cam e back and, no you pay, or you cannot leave (in an abrupt tone). After about 10 mins of argueing they evetually got hold of the manger on the phone, she was immediately abussive and said pay now or I call the police. Didn't even ask for my version. After another 5 mins arguing with her she relented and I put her back onto the cashier, who spoke to her for another few minutes. He the turns round and says I have to pay the full amount, but the manager had just agreed with us that she would wave the charge. The cashier responded that she had now changed her mind! To cut a long story short we eventually agreed to pay half as we were in danger of missing our flight.

“Terrible service”

The only negative thing that casted shadow on my otherwise wonderful stay in Rio is indeed Hotel Gloria. You can feel that it had been a glamarous venue at its heydays, but at the moment it is far from being 5 star place. The service is terrible and the management do not simply care. This is probably only 5 star hotel you may fight for hot water (it is that bad) Dont even think about considering this place to stay.

“Old dogs can't learn new tricks”

The Hotel Gloria may have had great days in the past, but management did not keep up with the times and the profits of the hotel are probably being spent abroad by the owner. This place is nothing but old. Granted, I moved here after staying at the curvacious and vivacious Sheraton Barra, so seeing this old lady with her smelly hallways and tiled floors did nothing for me. The room actually creeped me out a bit and I have spent months backpacking through North Africa and the Middle East. Had I not been hosted by a local company who paid for my room I would have moved upon check-in.

The outside of the hotel is worth preserving, but the inside is in dire need of refurbishment. My hallway smelled like a fast food joint connected their exhaust fan to the air conditioning, despite being on the 12th floor with no kitchen in sight.

The pool was nice with a pleasant view of the domestic airport and downtown Rio. The breakfast was standard Brazilian fare, but even the coffee tasted burned which is a mortal sin in Brazil. The local area is safe during the day, but you have to travel through the gauntlet of transvestites parading up and down the streets near the hotel, some in nothing more than a t-shirt.

Do yourself a favor and don't stay here.

“DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 April 2005

I had to stay in this horrible, nightmare, smelly and disgusting hotel for 1 night, when our flight got cancelled.
The hotel is very old, hallways, lobby and the rooms stink (literally), air condition doesn't work, beds are so uncomfortable I would rather sleep on the floor.

Even if Hotel Gloria paid me to stay there one more time, I wouldn't do it...
