“Rudest Staff I've Ever Met”

I actually didn't stay at the hotel myself, I just tried to go to my friends room with her and they tried making me pay R$70 (Around US$35), so if you plan on bringing visitors, I would suggest another hotel. The staff had clearly told me that if I came back after 7 am I would be aloud in the room free of cost. When I came back around 8, they told me that what they had said was, "If you pay the R$70, you can go to the room and stay until 7," which was just not true. Then they have me wait to talk with a manager who is supposed to be in at 8, but of corse he's late. He told me I was not aloud in the room without paying and if I had a problem with it I could talk to the police. Yeah right, the last people you want to talk to is Rio De Janeiro police. I could see him saying this if I was drunk and beligerant, but I was totally sober and totally calm about everything.

I've worked in the hotel industry for the last 3 years, and I have never witnessed any receptionist or manager as rude as the people at this hotel. I just couldn't believe it. I would have been fired from any of the three hotels I've worked at in the first day if I acted the way these people act. I hear a lot of reviews about places not caring, but not only did they not care, I almost felt they went out of their way to be rude! Worst customer service I've seen in my life, hands down!!! Do not stay at this hotel!!! I lived in Brazil for 6 months, and it's not Brazilian service, it's just this hotel. So don't let this review discourage you about service in Brazil, the people are awesome. Just don't stay at this hotel!

“Mixed feelings, but OK in general”

This hotel was booked for us by a travel agent. So, a good location, breakfast is OK, even though for a such star-slass I would extend the breakfast menu... (OK for me, but compared to most European hotels, this one was scarce).

Room was good and comfortable, even though the room floor was rather dirty when we checked-in. But in general - everythig nwas OK - the conditioner, the balcomy, the bathroom, etc.

Nothing special about receptionists - neither good nor bad.

Wi-Fi connection was bad, and there was neither free PC with Internet in the lobby (in a much smaller hotel in the other Brazilian city we found one and it was a great plus..)

The lift was too slow. .it took ages until it arrived once you pressed the button..

We have not been able to enjoy the roof pool because it was under reconstruction during our stay.

All in all - no special complaints, but nothing special good either. Just an average hotel. I suppose they are a bit "up-nosed" just because they are at Copacabana beach, otherwise, they would add more hospitality to their service. Just like in the other hotel where we stayed later - but that is a separate story:))

“Two Star hotel at best”

I go to Copacabana many times a year on business for the last ten years. I always like to try different hotels when I visit. This one was a major mistake. NEVER AGAIN! To begin with the Front Office manager was extremely rude and uncooperative. I don't remember his name but it was a four letter word starting with an E or O. Stay away from him!!! The room was small, the bed cushion was paper thin and the bed was tiny. The carpet was old and smelled really bad. The air con did not work well. The TV was 14 inches and barely works. The elevators broke twice. Once I waited for 20 minutes and the second time I just decided to go up the stairs to my apartment on the 6th floor. The breakfast was ok. Not that great compared to any other Rio hotels. The bathroom was ok as well but the amenities were horrible. Bring your own shampoo and soap. They also charged $5 to use the safe deposit box in the room. This hotel location was very nice but they desperately need renovations and training starting with the FOM. If Rio wants to get ready for World Cup, they better get their act together. If I was a first time visitor and my only hospitality experience was at the Oceano hotel I not only would never comeback but I would also make sure I tell my friends. One last word…Embratur please revise this hotel star rating. I would be generous to give them a two star. I will have a better experience at Super 8.

“Great place to stay , good value!”

My wife & i stayed here for 5 days . If we had seen the terible reviews about Oceana we would not have booked. Fortunately we did not see the reviews & our stay was pleasant & good value! It is obvious from the reviews that the owner has taken action on the complaints . The staff are all relatively new & had a good command of english & were very helpful, particularly Daniel, Jose & Juliana on the reception desk. Breakfast was good & a nice variety , though i must agree with other reviewers the coffee could be much improved & a much needed toaster would be a welcome addition. All our linens & general room condition were very good. Big bonus was the price & location as it is only a stones throw from the beach. Recommended!

“Reviews are accurate but this could be your hotel IF:”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 June 2010

You want a cheap, somewhat clean place (linens were very worn but clean) to stay in a pretty good location by reasonably priced restaurants, grocery store and right near the beach (1/8 of a block away).

You are a young traveler on a budget and wish to treat yourself to something a cut above a hostel.

You can speak Portuguese well enough to handle a dispute or a complicated request. Otherwise, get ready for frustration. We had a ridiculous dispute with the front desk that was their error and it was not handled well by reception. Let’s just leave it at that other reviewers have covered this problem in infinite detail.

Overall the rest of the staff was great: bell boys, waiters (the breakfast was pretty good horrible coffee though), and housekeepers were very receptive and helpful but again I was traveling with someone who speaks Portuguese very well so requests were understood. So there you have it. Give it a shot if the prices and location lure you. Otherwise keep looking....
