After reading every review I could find on this hotel, we booked it for a 7 night stay for our first ever visit to Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. The TripAdvisor reviewers who describe the hotel got it exactly right. I won't repeat their descriptions and will just tell you our experience. We were given what the hotel called a Superior Deluxe Suite with an Ocean view from the bedroom and a view of Christ the redeemer from the smaller office/sitting area if you turned your head to the left. The room was on floor 13 and considered refurbished--it was like a dorm room/suite with a very small bathroom with a granite counter top sink. (We used booking.com and thought we reserved an Executive Deluxe Ocean View.) It's still not clear on what type of rooms are available and what you will get when you check in. In this suite, not their largest, the sitting room could fit a twin size bed for our 11 year old son, a desk with a PC monitor/t.v. and a square table with two chairs. The small, you-can-barely-turn-around-in-it bathroom was between the sitting room and a big bedroom. The bedroom had a "queen-sized" bed which was two twins pushed together (common in Latin America) and the bedroom and bed were plenty big. We were comfortable and treated nicely, but there are not a lot of features to brag about in this hotel for what you pay for it. Location wise, the hotel is in Leblon which is considered a very ritzy area, but you wouldn't know if you saw it. Leblon is actually more residential, so you have to walk up two blocks to reach the street with all the restaurants and shops. We felt safe walking to the restaurants or the big grocery store 5 blocks away. Leblon Beach was also less crowded than Ipanema and Copacabana. The Front Desk Staff spoke English -- Douglas checked us in and he was really helpful. Other than the Front Desk staff, the rest of the hotel staff have very limited English and some Spanish. Brush up on your Portuguese if you plan to visit Brazil. If I were to recommend a location for a first time visit to Rio, I would recommend staying in Ipanema. It's a good middle of the action spot with easy access between Leblon and Copacabana. I recommend Marina Palace if you want to be in Leblon, in a quieter area than Ipanema and Copacabana, and you must be right across the street from the beach with a view and want a less crowded beach. We'll definitely return to Rio, but will stay in Ipanema next time, but not necessarily right across from the beach to save money and experience all that Rio has to offer.
Room Tip: If you stay here, splurge on an Ocean View Room; otherwise save your money and stay at another hotel...
