“Good location BUT a few watch-outs...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 March 2011

Most people have already outlined the pros of this hotel (mainly location and value) so let me focus on some of the 'watch outs' with this hotel.

- If you are budget-minded DO NOT book taxis or tours (incl. Carnaval and football tickets) through this hotel. We understand the addition of a small service fee, however their mark-ups are crazy. Some examples:
---> 170 Reals per person quoted for a ticket to the football - we bought tickets for 90 Reals from a local agency incl. transport
---> 100 Reals per person quoted to see sambadrome rehearsals - the event is actually FREE! Incl bus fares, snacks and drinks we only spent 20 Reals in total
---> 70 Reals for taxi to the airport quoted (should only cost 40-45 Reals)

They will go as far as telling you that an area is unsafe to get you to book with them. Our advice is to do your research before coming to this hotel to save yourself a LOAD of money. It is perfectly safe to catch buses and the metro and taxis can easily be hailed from the street.

Specifically about Carnaval tickets... know the average cost of tickets before coming to Rio and booking through the hotel. The internet **mysteriously** stopped working over the entire Carnaval period which meant everyone had to trust that they were getting a fair price (and they definitely were not!).

This hotel has potential, mainly because the location is fantastic and the non front desk staff are lovely.

“Fantastic Proximity to Beach & Bars!”

My boyfriend & I stayed at Hotel Ipanema Inn over the New Years period for 6 nights. It was a little pricey for the room we got - but most places are during the new year period. The key things going for this hotel is that is in a safe location close to great nightlife & the beach! Copacobana is great to visit & spend new years at, but we found the beaches & general area of Ipanema a lot nicer & safer (Copa feels a little seedy). We booked two great tours through the hotel - a favela tour which was the BEST thing we did in RIO!! & and an all day city tour of rio which takes you to Christ, Sugar Loaf Mountain, Scenic Outlooks, Maracana, Centro & Sambadrome (where carnivale is held) - the latter is a great way to see all the sights - it´s a long day but worth it.

In general we loved RIO!! & highly recommend staying at Hotel Ipanema Inn.

“Excellent location, average hotel”

We were in Rio in for the new year celebration. Inspite the celebration beeing in Copacabana, we wanted a hotel in Ipanema, cause we know it's THE location in Rio. The price was quite expensive 2500 BRL for 5 nights stay. But ok it is Rio, its new year....
Breakfast was ok, Iloved the ananas. The staff not specially friendly, when we arrived they still tried to make us pay an extra tax (taxe de séjour) of 240 BRL, which wasn't menntioned anywhere! I refused, and the man said something in portuguese I'did unsterdand but like: "promotion", ok they tried to get us, but it didn't work.
Inspite of this experice, I would recomend this place cause, if you go to Rio, you prefer to be outside than in your hotel room, and the location of this hotel is really good.

“Very basic, dated - ok but can get better value for money”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2010

I had stayed around the corner in Copacabana for a few nights at the Rio Copacabana hotel, then booked to stay in Ipanema. I wish I had of stayed in the first hotel as they were the same price yet the first was a lot nicer...

Ipanema Inn is very basic, similar to Travelodge but more worn down. The rooms and bathroom are smaller - it's the location which you pay for. The breakfast was quite nice, however the hotel doesn't offer any additional facilities.

The staff insisted I pay a cash staff tip of 10% as I was checking out, I had already been tipping the staff for good service, as I wasn't aware of this charge as its not advertised anywhere. The man on reception said its optional but insisted I should pay it and seemed demanding, I refused as I'd only been there for one night and was quite annoyed at this - the service wasn't that good.

On the plus side, the beds were comfy and the hotel is quite quiet - however I'd recommended staying inbetween Copacabana and Ipanema as it may be cheaper as it's only 5min walk each way to both beaches / shops. Ipanema also has it's own recently opened metro station which is 10mins walk from the hotel - it's near the Copacabana end.
