We stayed at Miramar Palace during the Carnaval- while it was very overpriced, I understand all Rio hotels rates were tripled during that time and value was hard-to-find. Having said that the quality of the rooms really underwhelmed.
What I held against them was the poor & uninterested service at the front desk (save for one lady who wore glasses and had long hair- sorry I don't remember her name- who was at least friendly). Other cons:
- The corridors reeked of smoke, and the rooms had a unidentified odor
- No money changers in area around hotel (though they would of course be shut during the Carnval period...) and food choices in proximity seemed to be limited only to kilo dinners
- No wireless internet in rooms, but you can get a cable for internet access.
Pros:
- The good thing about the hotel is its location, as close to the beachfront as you can get- and within easy walking distance of Ipanema. But it could get fairly noisy since it faces a main road, & also is at a spot where Carnaval street parties were held. There is a supermarket close by.
- Beds were comfortable
- To their credit, their buffet breakfast spread was one of the best; good selection and all fresh. Wait staff was friendly. Would not recommend restaurant for dinner unless desperate.
