“Charming hotel, excellent staff, good value, good breakfast, disappointing restaurant though”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2011

I am surprised by the more recent 'average' and 'poor' reviews on Hotel Portinari.

LOCATION: Excellent location on the south end of Copacabana beach near the Copacabana Fort so convenient for both Copacabana and Ipanema. It is also near pharmacies and other stores for last minute things. Metro stations very close and recommend for travelling throughout Rio as it is cheap, quick and safe.

STAFF: The staff shine at this hotel: they were instrumental in our activities while in Rio helping to book restaurants, tours even paragliding off mountains. Our trip would have been much more difficult without them! I spent 30 minutes finding a romantic restaurant with their reception within the area. Their dedication to helping you and problem solving is noted and appreciated.

HOTEL ROOM: We stayed on the 7th floor in a junior suite which was minimalist, clean lines. Very reminiscent to IKEA show room designs but not nearly as cheap feeling. The shower was large with two shower heads. It comes with hair dryers etc. The only downside is the only mirror is in the bathroom. Bed was very comfortable and there's lots of wardrobe space. FREE UNLIMITED WIRELESS IN BEDROOMS.

RESTAURANT / FOOD: The only draw back for me was the restaurant. The breakfast is good (however the same everyday) but the restaurant does not look as modern as the rest of the hotel. We had dinner one night which was disappointing. There are a lot of places to eat in Rio, especially in this area, so while the restaurant is not competitive, you are also not stuck for choice either. I encourage you to eat around Rio especially in this area.

GYM: I did not use this, I only saw it. It is small and probably the smallest hotel gym I have ever seen. I also did not see anyone else using it. The machines appear to be in good condition though and there is a good view of Copacabana as this gym is on the top floor 13+ stories up.

OVERALL: This hotel is in a desirable area of Rio where there are alot of very cheap places which look and feel hostel like or there is the up-market, very expensive places. You get what you pay for. If you are looking for a flamboyant design hotel, in my view, this is low impact but it is very comfortable, enjoyable and rewarding for its price bracket. I would stay again and recommend it to others.

Room Tip: Look at the website and request a floor at booking

“3 words: avoid, avoid, avoid”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2010

it is terrible: confusion night & day. everything I asked at the receptionist they did not know anything (seemed to be all boys in internship), they told me to give me a room at the highets floor and when I arrived it was on of the first floors. I gave to the lavandery some stuff and they stole me half things & nobody in the hotel helped me. AVOID AVOID AVOID

“Average without much great design”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2010

We chose this hotel based on value and reviews and found it to be a good basic hotel - while nothing was wrong with the hotel per se, it wasn't really a stellar design hotel. The rooms vary depending on the floor, and we stayed on 11 which was fine but nothing spectacular or inspiring.

The staff was nice and helped get us taxis and a reservation at a restaurant we wanted but pushed us to make our own reservations for dinners and weren't so helpful with directions or suggestions.

Rooms were clean and located across from the beach in Copacobana and an easy walk/ride to Ipanema or Leblon. Breakfast was good and doormen were helpful in getting cabs. Staff was nice overall but not overly helpful per se.

For a basic hotel, this is a good option but if you're looking for something more luxurious this is not the place.

“Good location but very basic hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2010

Location is the best thing about this hotel, but the description of 'designer quality and style' clearly does not apply to this hotel. The rooms all need a revamp as they are very run down, and we had lots of problems with things not working. This hotel sounds great but looks incredibly old and below standards.
Breakfast is good though, and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly (which made up for the below adverage setting).

“Average hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 March 2010

The name of the hotel certainly makes it sound very trendy. But it really isn't the case. Copacabana as a place is a lot of run down compared to Ipanema or Leblon. The lobby of the hotel is quite small. We were greeted by staff who were not very helpful, but not discourteous either. There was a bit of trouble with our booking but they became more accomodating when they realised they might be overcharging us. Also when we went out later they seemed to have a special relationship with over charging drivers.

We secured a room on the 9th floor which is a good idea as your avoid a lot of the outside noise. They do charge you for access to the safe. We didn't use the telephone owing to other reviews on here about extortionate charges. The bathroom facilities were a real disappointment with signs of rust and very old fixtures. It wasn't very spaceous either. The towels and toileteries provided weren't great either.

All in all it would be an acceptable 3 star hotel. Nothing more. Don't be fooled by it being a design or boutique hotel in anyway!
