“Great hotel, great location, great staff”

Before going to Rio, we read many very bad reviews about this hotel and it made us very scared. But since this was the only hotel available hotel we had no choice but to book it. To our surprise, the hotel was nothing like the reviews had said. It was a great hotel. Great location, great staff and rooms are clean and same size as most 3 star hotels. The staff is very helpful and friendly and know English very well. The only negative is that although the breakfast is great, it's the same every day and only 2 choices for those having a hot breakfast (eggs and sausages). And also sleeping at night is a problem cause of the noice from the traffic. But overall, we were very happy with everything and would stay there again.

“Functional but it all worked for me, I would stay again”

After reading the mixed reviews I wasn't sure about this hotel for my third trip to Rio. I am President of Operations for a USA hotel company, so I know hotels. I just returned from an eight night stay.

Arrival was very late after a 12 hour delay thanks to American Airlines.
Check in was effficent - no problems.
Room was just like the photo - a king made up up two twin beds put together.
Bathroom renovated with granite touches.
Bed was medicocre but I slept well everynight!
Two pillows on the bed plus three more to choose from in the closet.
Room very clean, and good housekeeping EVERY day.
Breakfast was typically Brasilian, the same every day. Scrambled eggs, wieners, fruits, breads, yogurt, cereals etc. Worked for me. Coffee was so-so, but very Brasilian!
Wifi worked - faster on the by minute connection, but worked better than many US hotels.
Location was great - two blocks from the beach, close to the Ipanema end of Copacabana.
The Othon poster in the elevator says this is the most economical and functional hotel of the Othon chain in Rio. And I agree. Was fine with me. For $100 USD a night, I felt like I got what I paid for and quite content.
Withim this price range I DO recommend.

“Good Price and Location - Cleanliness not so good”

It is a friendly hotel with good location but the rooms are rather old and not very friendly.
In general is a good hotel to sleep and to walk in Copacabana because it has a great location. the breakfast is varied and good and pays the price.

“Awful Rooms, old, run down, not worth the money!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 March 2010

We researched for quite a while on this site and other sites to find a reasonable hotel close to Copacabana beach and both my wife and myself decided on the Savoy Othon Travel to be the best bet and best option considering location and value for money. A few days before our trip I got into contact with the reservations department of the hotel, the first person was UNABLE to find my booking and the second then confirmed my booking and my observation to have a double bed and specifically not to have 2 single beds pushed together. We finally arrived at the hotel on the given day, we arrived in the evening and were quite tired when we got to the hotel so were looking forward to sleeping and getting to our room.
We checked into the hotel and were told that we had a double room with 2 beds, the reception told us that it was easier for them to set up the room with 2 single beds as if we were brothers it would be easier for them to separate the beds, I said that we were married and we had requested a double bed already knowing that hotels do this sort of thing.
When we told the reception that we had requested that we have a double bed both through the website we booked and their own booking department they just said that all the double beds go quickly and there was nothing they could do until the next day.

When we went to the room it looked old , the guy that pushed the beds together knocked the bedside light over and after that moment it didn't work anymore, the cover for the electricity socket fell off , the mini-bar only had 1 small bottle of water in it, nothing else. The sheets were old, had holes in them and was dirty. The beds were pushed together with us in the room and not done before which I find extremely unprofessional. The bath in the bathroom was old and stained and there were fish-moths on the wall . The air conditioning was effective but the intake for the air-con looked like it hadn't been cleaned for quite a few years and surprisingly my wife is sick now after the trip! (probably due to the air-con's cleanliness).
We were moved to another room the next day, with the smallest double bed I have seem in my life, mini-bar with only 1 bottle of water, at least the TV reception was better in the second room as in the first it was ridiculous. We were moved to a satisfactory room, but the damage had already been done!

“Great location for a total dump.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 February 2010

I stayed here during Carnaval, and the only reason I did so was because there wasn't anything else available (booked my trip too late for better). The rooms are no frills - with an infestation of ants (in mine) as the only notable feature. I can't think of a single reason that you'd want to stay here except that you are desperate for a place during Carnaval and/or want to stay at the Rio hotel closest to a Domino's pizza outlet.
