I stayed at Um Meia Tres back in April 2011 for 2 weeks & must say that it is the best place I have ever stayed.
The welcome was warm & friendly & I was treated like a member of the family. Bill & Sue are the perfect hosts from start to end. Their knowledge of the city, people & culture is outstanding. They encourage you to get out & about & guide you to all the best places to go & things to do. I was lucky to be invited to one of their legendary friends & family BBQs, even though the heavens opened, we all had a top night.
Um Meia Tres is a true home from home. The rooms & all facilities are fantastic & the views from the rooms & the pool area are breath taking. I do not have a negative word to say about this property.
The area of Santa Teresa is beautiful. Stunning architecture, welcoming locals & great bars, its a real haven from the hustle & bustle of the city. You will need to use the famous tram or the local buses or taxis to get to & from Santa Teresa as the walk up the hills are hard work. But please don't let this put you off though.
My favourite things to do in Rio.....Cook in Rio with (www.cookinrio.com), Sugar Loaf, Arpoador Rock for the Sunset, Tijuca National Forest, Christ the redeemer/ Corcovado, all the beaches, Ipanema Hippie market (Sunday), Botafogo bay & Urca & the botanical gardens. You will never bored in Rio. There is some much to see & do. A Friday night in Lapa is a must, this city parties hard!
I also highly recommend a visit to The Maze Inn (www.jazzrio.com) & (http://jazzrio.info/content/blogsection/5/30/lang,en/) in the Tavares Bastos Favela. It's the safest Faveala in Rio thanks to all the hard work of Bob Nadkarni, his family & the locals who have worked tiredless to clean up the Favela & take it back from the drug gangs. Keep an eye out for the Elite Police force, The BOPE as they train there. Bill & Sue will give you the low down on Senor Bill ;)
Room Tip: Top floor with balcony (Room 6) Fantastic views over Centro & the Nitero Bridge
