My wife and I stayed here in early August, location was great for us as we needed to be relatively close to the Santa Teresa area. The Flamengo neighborhood was nice, several supermarkets, restaurants, banks, and shopping close by. Was nice to walk down to the market and get some snacks and drinks to have in the room, although there was a minibar. We would ultimately regret it being there though...
Hotel was reasonably priced, rooms were clean, with comfortable beds, and large bathrooms. Overall, the staff was very polite, not overly friendly, but nice enough. The bellman were great, even helped park the rental car when the garage was all but full. The maid staff also did a great job cleaning the rooms. Ordered room service late one evening, was actually very good.
Unfortunately one of the elevators was out during our stay, and after the first night, the internet in the hotel, which was around $5 US per day, stopped working. No big deal though, there was an internet cafe just down the street.
Until the day of check out, actually until our final 10 minutes in the hotel, I would have given a positive review. But things took a turn for the worse. That morning, we asked if we could check out later that evening and pay a part-day charge, do to the fact that we had a late flight that night. They said that we could stay, but it would be for a full night's rate. Ok, this was fine, not their problem, we paid the full night's rate. So we left that morning for a final day at the beach, and put the do not disturb sign on the door. When we returned that afternoon, the room had been cleaned, yet the sign was still on the door. Ok, a little annoying, but not the end of the world.
When we went to check out, we were incorrectly charged for a drink out of the minibar. We explained to a lady at the desk, who seemed to be the owner, that we had put our own drinks in the refrigerator and drank only those. Basically, the way things ended, she said that while it was indeed a mistake for the maids to go into our room when the do not disturb sign was on the door, they could not have make a mistake in counting the minibar, and we would have to pay for the drink.
You would think that a hotel, any hotel, would give a disputing customer the benefit of the doubt over a 2.50 reais (about $1.40 US) coca-cola, especially the owner. Well, apparently not the Mengo Palace.
Not saying you should avoid this hotel because of such a silly circumstance... but we will be looking elsewhere for future stays in Rio.
