I just returned from a two night stay. The Pousada is located a little too far from the main center of the city for walking, at least for me, but driving to downtown was easy enough and parking as well - so no complaints there. The staff was very friendly, including the owner. It is a secluded place, quiet, located off a dirt road at the end of the beach, and the rooms look like chalets. There is a loft, and on the main floor there is a room with a double bed, a small kitchen, bathroom, and living room with two single beds. A little dark, with little lighting, but comfortable. Two A/C's, one in the bedroom and one in the living room. WIFI reception was good, but available TV channels limited - no English channel TV.
Definitely for nature lovers, with lots of trees and nice private gardens. Overall this pousada only has 5 (or 6) rooms (sorry don't remember the exact number), so plenty of privacy. It also has a pool and whirlpool.
I think the thing that disappointed me the most are those little things that can make a visit great or just 'ok', considering that this property is not exactly cheap. Since I was paying R$400 a night (which is about $225) I did have some type of expectations.
The first "little" disappointment happened after the first night. My travel companion and I enjoyed downtown Paraty quite a bit the night before and did not return until about 3:00am in the morning. This caused us to sleep in and miss the breakfast. Since breakfast was only from 8:00am - 10:00am, I did not expect much when I arrived for a cup of coffee at noon. While the owner offered us some left over food, I could not convince him to make me a pot of coffee for me (which was definitely needed). How hard is it to put a water into a coffee maker and make some coffee? It is not like it is a big hotel....5-6 rooms???? The response I got was that coffee and tea was offered between 5-7:00pm. I even offered to make coffee myself.....I do know how to use a coffee maker....
The second disappointment was the second morning. We woke-up in time for breakfast, but there was not enough orange juice for both myself and my companion. I asked for more orange juice, but was asked if I could drink other juice because making more orange juice was "a lot of work". In the end it took a little convincing, but extra orange juice was made - even so not enough for my companion.
So, at least for me, those little things is what makes all the difference in the world especially when I paid $450 for two nights. Can't make a pot of coffee for me, nor additional orange juice??? Sorry, big time failing grades!!!
