“Best stay in Brazil!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

I've been meaning to write this review for the past two months, so here goes.
Summed up in a single word, our stay in this Pousada was UNFORGETTABLE!! The Pousada is tranquil, beautiful and very tastefully done up. Our room was very spacious and comfy. Breakfast was a feast every single day of our stay. Christoph, the co-owner who also runs Bistrot Voila within the Pousada (see my review), pampered us with amazing treats every morning. As an added bonus, breakfast is served on a terrace overlooking a river - it really can't get better than that! Oh, it did, as it came with the company of the world's most sociable and laziest cat - Mimo!

Not having been to Paraty before, it was pure luck that we'd booked a place outside the town centre. Don't get me wrong, the historic centre in Paraty is charming and all that, but there is very little local life, except for the restaurants and shops serving the tourists. Caminho do Ouro, on the other hand, is located bang in the middle of a village ca. 6 km outside the town centre. This was perfect for exploring the beautiful, lush hills and woods of Paraty and to get a glimpse of local life. We hired bicycles and did what lots of the locals did - we cycled nearly everywhere and had a great time doing it!

Finally, a few words on the hosts, Adrianna and Christoph. Their hospitability is first rate and both have a really lovely, warm, friendly manner about them. They made sure our stay at the Pousada was very comfortable, so our sincere thanks for a wonderful time.

If you're heading out to Paraty, make sure this is your address #1!

“Beautiful Pousada!! What more can I say....”

My wife and I stayed at this quaint little gem of a pousada in February 2011. We arrived by car very late on Friday evening (after midnight) and our host, Adriana, was awaiting our arrival and couldn't have been kinder, showing us our room and allowing us to sleep rather than sign in, which we did the following day.

When we woke the following morning, we were introduced to a beautiful breakfast outside on a veranda next to a river. What a great start to the day! We then headed in to the center of Paraty - the pousada itself is not really in Paraty, so a car is somewhat necessary. Paraty is a wonderful little town, full of colour, vibrance and history. Not far from Paraty is the most incredible beach. It's hard to find as it's off the main road (if going towards Sao Paulo) but look out for the sign that reads Trindade, which is the beach you're looking for. You'll know it when you head half way up a mountain, back down and into a makeshift car park!!

After a wonderful day at the beach, we headed into Paraty for lunch (lots of lovely little restaurants where you can enjoy a meal out in the sun) and soaked up some of the involving history.

In the evening, we returned to the pousada and enjoyed a fabulous meal, cooked by Adriana's husband, Christophe, who happens to be a French cook, and therefore is a dab hand in the kitchen. As a trained chef, I can safely say that Christophe is a great cook and both Adriana and Christophe serve as great hosts as the evening progresses.

My wife and I were both sad to say goodbye to an amazing weekend at this jewel of a place, but we will return, and can only look forward to enjoying the company of two wonderful hosts, a dreamy, cosy pousada, and a beautiful little town in Paraty. We both highly, H-I-G-H-L-Y recommend Pousada Caminho do Ouro to one and all, especially as a romantic week/weekend away. Thank you Adriana and Christophe!!

“Absolutely wonderful and the food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 May 2011

Yes yes yes! Arianna and Cristoff are wonderful hosts! They met us at the bus station, took our luggage back to the pousada while we walked around Parati. We later took a cab back (b/w R$20-$25; 6km from town). The pousada is lovely and quiet. A real hidden gem, beautifully and tastefully decorated (the pictures on tripadvisor don't do it justice).

We felt completely comfortable with our two kids (5 & 8) - though the place would also be perfect for a romantic getaway. We ate at Voiila Bistro two of our three nights - and regret not eating there a third. Christophe is an EXCELLENT chef (Wild boar one night, duck the other - and he fixed special plates for our kids). The restaurant isn't cheap, but it is not overpriced relative to the other restaurants in town, especially for what it is. On our last day Adriana took us to see the waterfall near the pousada and then to town for our bus.

Oh, did I mention the breakfasts out on the deck looking over the river. The croissants are to die for (though he didn't make them every day, sad!).

“Nice B&B with great hosts”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2010

This B&B is hosted by the nice and friendly couple Christophe and Adriana and Christophe is a great French chef. On our first night, we have an excellent French dinner cooked by Christophe, very plentiful and delicious! Every morning, we had breakfast on the verandah with a beautiful, calm and relaxing scenery next to a river. The presentation of the breakfast was one of the best we have seen with attention to detail, everything prepared with fresh ingredients.

The room is well kept with a charm to it in its decor of the bed linens. This B&B is a little away from the historic town, but if you have a car, you won't have a problem getting there to the main drag.

One must take the schoona or private boat tours in Parati to fully enjoy the beatufiul scenary of Parati. We got to the pier late and the schooonas had already left for the day (11:00am), maybe because it was low season and there was only one tour per day. However, this turned out to be the best for us as we ended up negotiating a great deal and hiring a private boat for 4-5 hours and the cost was very reasonable. I highly recommend doing the private boat as you can choose where to go and how long you want to stay at one place, as the boat stops at certain beaches. We hired the guy Domingo with the pink boat, there is no way of not spotting his boat! He was a character with his slippers and swimming trunks matching the boat colors... good guy, just don't know if he speaks any English, as I speak Portuguese. I highly recommend stopping at the miniscule Ilha do Catimbau and eating at the restaurant. It's expensive, but worth the view, the peaceful setting and the ceviche was very fresh.

We have great memories of Parati, only regret is that the trip was too short and would love to explore more if we ever go back.
