The place is in a great location - very quiet and isolated and a few minutes boat ride from the village.
It is the perfect place for couples who want some time alone, but I would not recommend it for anyone who wants a lively place. There are only a few rooms and no official bar or anything so the place is quiet all day and throughout the evening.
The private beach is OK but not as nice as the pictures make it out to be. You can walk into town which takes about 20 mins but be warned, you will have to climb up over rocks and some rocky terrain and even go in the sea at one point -depending on the tide.. The hotel offers a boat service to and from the village but charge you each time which is a bit of a shame.
The breakfast is OK but nothing special.
We were suprised upon departure (and even during our stay there) - that non of the staff once asked us if everything was OK or if we enjoyed our stay.
I would recommend the place to couples who want some peace and quiet but it was too quiet and isolated for me.

I had a great time at Asalem recently, with my parrents. Really nice pousada, a short walk (25 min) from Abrao, the city on Ilha grande. Good spacious rooms, very clean, amazing view over the sea, a good breakfast and a high service level.

We had dinner 1 day during our 4 day stay, and it was only so so. My mom and I were thrilled, but my father didn't really enjoy his fish dish. Except for that, I have no complains.

Price is a little on the high side I think as well, but ok, we went in the high season. A little lower price, and some better skills in the kitchen, and I would have give 5 stars.

We had an amazing stay at Asalem, the bilingual staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The dinner was probably the best food we had on the island and the rooms were perfect. It is definitely not a state of the art luxury resort, but if you are looking for a beautiful relaxing place with a great environment I would highly recommend this place. The boat service into town is great however they do charge $3.59 USD per person each time you want to go. We attempted to hike to Asalem one evening from the village of Abrao in the dark, and I would not recommend it, unless you have some bright lights. All in all great place, and I would love to return.

We had a great time at asalem. It's a 5min boat ride from abrao and we liked being away from the the village but still relatively close. Slightly annoying that asalem charge every time you go on the boat even for a 2 min ride to sagu restaurant. We stayed in both standard room and Eco honeymoon suite and would definitely recommend the suite as it is significantly larger, and higher standard. Hotel needs to improve it's communal area as this is not a good enough standard especially compared to sagu resort. Food was good for both breakfast and evening. All in all, a great get away from it all romantic accommodation and would recommend.
