“nice friendly place, helpful staff & excellent views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

Nice friendly place, very helpful staff eager to assist with restaurant bookings etc

Hotel is secure and seems to have staff available at all times. I would definitely stay here again.

Recommend to get a seaview room, I had no. 2 and it was great, I think any on the same floor would be equally good. The views across the beach and landscape are pretty good.

I initially had a standard room downstairs which wasnt upto my expectations, I could only see a wall out of the window.

Free wireless although it doesnt seem to reach to many of the rooms, works fine in reception though.

Breakfast is simple but fresh each day, it is enough to stop you from being hungry but is a bit boring after a few days.

Ricardo the owner's English is excellent and he can help with any queries.

The hotel is up a hill, it takes about 10mins to walk into town (where the Brigitte Bardot statue is) and a bit longer to get back. There are at least 3 beaches within about 10mins walk, and several others if you want to stretch the legs a bit more.

Room Tip: go for room 2 it has an excellent view and isnt much more expensive than a standard room.

“Wonderful stay in Buzios!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

I stayed here in September 2008 and had a wonderful experience. Years later and its still one of my fondest travel memories. The rooms were clean, spacious, airy, and overlooked the sea below. Hammocks on the balcony added an extra element of tranquility. The owner was a sweatheart and the staff was very attentive. If I come back to Buzios, I will definitely stay here again.

“Great place to stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2011

My husband and I were visiting our friends in Rio for about 9 days, and the 4 of us took a short trip to Buzios for 2 days while we were there. It's not a bad trip, about 2 hours from Rio, and pretty easy on the highway.

Each couple stayed in a Superior, Sea-View room on the 2nd floor, which were really quite nice. We had a gorgeous view of the pousada's pool down below, and could see the Joao Fernandes beach and the sea from our balcony. It was really quite breathtaking.

The room itself was a very nice size, with a Queen sized bed, a large closet, and a good-sized bathroom. It had a TV and a mini-fridge and a bench beside the TV stand, which was helpful for storing things (like beach stuff). The sliding glass doors led out to a nice balcony, with a small table and 2 chairs. The bathroom had a large shower, with more breathtaking views (don't worry- nobody can see you- you're up too high!!) from inside the shower. Our friends had problems with the hot water in their shower- it took forever to get hot and then still wasn't really hot, so the staff moved them to another room, where the water was much better, so we appreciated that accomodation.

The room was clean, the staff was very polite and friendly. Since our friends are Brazillian, they of course speak Portuguese, but there was staff on hand that spoke English, which was helpful when they weren't there. I believe that the owners are from Argentina, so I believe some of the staff also speaks Spanish.

They serve breakfast each morning, and it was a little different each morning, but about the same: a basket of traditional cheese bread (YUM) and a selection of other breads, like a sweet cake and rolls, juice, and fresh fruit, and a plate of ham and cheese. There was also a selection of dry cereal you could help yourself to. It was just enough to fill you up and get you started on your day.

The pousada is a short 5-10 minute walk from the Joao Fernandes beach, but if you are disabled or have trouble walking, you will not enjoy the walk. It's mostly downhill, and a little hard on the knees. The hills in Buzios actually reminded me of San Francisco, they're so steep in some places!! And coming back is of course a little more tiring, because it's uphill. But it's really not so bad, and if you ate the good food or drank beer at the beach, the mini-workout is good for you!! To get anywhere else, you do need to have a car, but it's a short drive to downtown Buzios, and we also drove to Geriba Beach, which was a short drive away as well.

As for safety, we always felt safe in all the parts of Buzios that we visited. The pousada does have a small safe in each room if you want to leave your passports/money etc there. When you leave the pousada for the day, you do have to give your room key to the staff before you leave, but you keep the safe key, so I would suggest that if you are not taking valuables with you, lock them up in the safe.

All in all, a great couple of days at this pousada in Buzios! The rooms were pretty inexpensive for this area, and we felt we got a good deal, especially since breakfast was included. It's not a luxury hotel, so there are no amenities like spa services or massages, like you would find at more expensive places, but we really didn't spend a lot of time at the pousada itself, so that was fine with us. We just wanted a nice, clean place to stay with great views, close to a beach, at a good price and breakfast included. This answered it all!

Room Tip: Get a 2nd floor, Superior sea-view room. It's worth the extra money! The views are amazing!!

“Best combination of location, charm, hospitality and value we could find in Buzios”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2011

We did a lot of homework and shopping around before our two week stay in Buzios, including the most highly rated of the Trip Advisor pousadas. We found this one on Buzios online under "moderate" pousadas, were taken by the stunning pictures, and found it priced at levels of pousadas without anything special to recommend them. To say we were not disappointed would be to understate our great satisfaction with our choice. First, the location is superb - Praia Joao Fermandez is a great home beach - one of the nest in Buzios and the one of these that is closest to Rua de Pedro. Second, the hospitality was first rate - the hosts made accomodations for my two-child family we would not expect from a larger establishment (including arranging baby sitting and a host of other things). Decor is simple but very charming, wi-fi worked everywhere. Breakfast was simple but good. Most other guests were Brazilian, which suited us fine. I expect we'll come back to Buzios, and that we definitely will stay here when we come. By the way, we'd also recommend Sakao, a hearty and inspired sandwich/juice bar ten minutes walk to Ossos.

“Great place to stay with romantic view and high service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 May 2011

Baia do Joao is a great place to stay. When we got there we were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm, hospitality and great seaview of this “little paradise”in Busios. After a short chat, we directly got a refreshing drink, because we travelled for a while and the hill where Baia do Jaoa is situated on is quite uphill. After that we got the key of our room that was luxury and had a balcony with great view over the sea and Playa Joao Fernandes beach. The atmosphere of this Pousada is romantic and quite, but only a 100mtrs from the beach and nice fish restaurants. Many thanks to the owner couple who made a delicious breakfast and even brought us to the busstation when we left. We would definitely come back here if we’re around.
