We went to Buzios in a second week of December 2011. The pousada is located on a hill and is surrounded by tropical plants and palm trees. From the pousada it will take about 10 minutes to get to the centre and the closest beach is about 15 minutes walk.
We have used the Praia Brava, which is the closest one, and we both loved it, we think is the most beautiful beach in this area. Praia Brava was a combination of sandy beach with lots of rocky coast on its edges, water is cristal clear and blue, it's very quiet and gives you lots of privacy if that is what you prefer.
Pousada itself is not too big, decorated in very rustic style. Reception/ lounge / bar area is very relaxing and has great views. We have stayed in a Master Suite (12), not too far from the reception which was very convenient. Room was very spacious, well decorated with good storage and had a balcony overlooking small garden. Few steps from the garden there was a swimming pool with loungers set in tropical garden.
We have both enjoyed our stay in Porto Bay, the reason for rating it just avarage is few things which were not up to the standard which we both expected.
The pousada offers breakfast service which was very good, but only small bar menu during the day (only few salads, pizzas and pastas, which weren't great), every time you would like to eat, you ned to travel to the town. In addition food is only offered from 1pm till 9pm.
There was quite a lot of refurbishment going on in the pool area, workers walking around all day, as our room was on a garden level there was constant traffic of people passing by our balcony so we had to have our curtains closed at all time and our privacy on the poolside was disturbed as well.
Moving on to the room, like i said before, great room but lots of other things lets it down. Bed linen was always feeling very damp and the smell of damp was overpowering, it looked like the pillows and duvet was damp inside and never aired outside to dry, very uncomfortable. The linen was stained as well, and when we accidentaly spilled something over the linen, we found it turned upside down to hide the stain by the housekeepers (instead of beeing changed to new one...).
We had problems with hot water for majority of our stay, most of the time the water was freezing cold, we had to complain to the reception for it to be turned back on just to find it cold again next day.
Another thing was, we have forgotten the converter to the plugs and they could not provide us with one at the pousada, there was a desktop computer in the lounge which broke down on a second day of our stay and they never repair or replaced it. So we were left with no phones, cameras, laptops for duration of our stay..
There was quite a lot of building works going on all around the town and especially pousadas area, not the best to look at. Town centre was very pretty with lots of shops and restaurants. Most of shops were very overpriced, top end of Londons prices! Quite few of the restaurants tried to offer posh food, charging rediculous prices for it but they could not follow through with the quality, very poor for again top end London restaurant prices. On the other hand the typical Brazilian restaurans were very good, reasonably priced, food was delicious and we were spoiled for choice.
Overall good holiday but the standard of service is not quite yet there, no where close to the european level. We had good time, but next time we choose something offering right level of service for what you need to pay.
