“Private place but close enough to the center”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

I really liked the location. You can walk to the center but it's not too close so it gets pretty quiet at night. Once I stayed close to the center and it was really noisy there! The service was good. Breakfast was fine for me, I'm brazilian and we are not used to eating hot food in the morning. They don't have things like eggs and bacon... I stayed in the royal suite, and I had a great view of buzios and the sea. It's not a five star hotel and the price is fair for what you get.

“Big disappointment!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

This guest house is a 15-20 minute walk from the centre of Buzios which was fine for me and my girlfriend but may be slightly too far for people who are not keen on walking.

We were welcomed by smiling staff and a glass of sparkling wine which was nice. We were told about things to do in Buzios and a few restaurants were recommended to us. Great start.

Things went downhill when we were shown to our room! The room was dark even with the curtains open and there was a damp smell throughout which had been masked with some detergent spray which made it worse. The plug socket for the tv was hanging off which is never a good sign. The price of food and drink from the mini bar was a joke so we didn't bother.
The worst part was the bathroom which had a large amount of mould in the shower in between the tiles and around the window. It's the worst mould I have ever seen in a hotel and was totally unacceptable!
Also during the first nights sleep I was awoken by a constant dripping on to my head from the air con unit. The next morning I complained and was told it would be fixed straight away. However it was not fixed on our return to the room later that day. All that had been done was that a towel had been shoved in the air con unit and one rolled up and placed on the headboard to catch the drips. This was the last straw so we asked to be moved to another room. We were told there was a room next to us which we could move into once it was cleaned. However when we got in the room the bathroom was just the same as our previous one.

Breakfast by the pool sounds nice and romantic but it was not.The tables and chairs were in need of a good scrub with some soap and water (ten minute job). The pool area itself looked over grown and run down.Breakfast itself was a let down - small selection of fruit, bread, cheese and ham. No hot food. We never took longer than 15 mins for breakfast because we wanted to get out of the hotel.

The hotel really let us down as it was our last destination before leaving Brazil after 2 amazing weeks. Buzios is lovely with some amazing beaches and fantastic food but I wish we had stayed in another hotel or guesthouse. The pictures on the website make it look like paradise but it is far from it and needs a good clean and refurb.

“A guest house in a residential area”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 December 2011 via mobile

Do not get mistaken by the website that seduce you. This is a guest house, located on a little hill in a residential area and when you arrive you first ask yourself, is this it? It looks like a family house from the street. Inside, things get a bit better with an open lobby area with checkin and a bar and lovely views. We got a suite and it wasnt the most wonderful decoration but the bed was just fantastic. Since we initially didnt like the room we wanted to change and were offered a smaller room but then the beds were hard and there were no views at all. But the rooms were a bit cosier. So we decided to stick with what we had so that we at least could enjoy the views and the stunningly lovely comfortable bed. The second room in the suite didnt have as good beds as the master but the kids were ok so no worries. The pool area was lovely but the water a bit chilly, this was in midwinter. The breakfast was served around the pool. My impression of the breakfast can be summarized as follows: basic. Not much to excite us. We had stayed in their sister hotel in SP and the 2 establishments are worlds apart, sadly. You would never guess they belong to the same group. This reminded me of some b+b's ive stayed at. Not many guests so not much breakfast items to choose from either. On lucky days the fruit was great though. The nespresso coffee was at an additional charge sadly. Should not be like that at a relatively pricey place like this. I must say that the one thing that stand out was the service. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Absolutely great. Maybe bar the breakfast lady, she never smiled and knew no words in english. Overall, we enjoyed it and it was all due to the staff, the bed and views.

“Good holiday..”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 December 2011

We went to Buzios in a second week of December 2011. The pousada is located on a hill and is surrounded by tropical plants and palm trees. From the pousada it will take about 10 minutes to get to the centre and the closest beach is about 15 minutes walk.
We have used the Praia Brava, which is the closest one, and we both loved it, we think is the most beautiful beach in this area. Praia Brava was a combination of sandy beach with lots of rocky coast on its edges, water is cristal clear and blue, it's very quiet and gives you lots of privacy if that is what you prefer.
Pousada itself is not too big, decorated in very rustic style. Reception/ lounge / bar area is very relaxing and has great views. We have stayed in a Master Suite (12), not too far from the reception which was very convenient. Room was very spacious, well decorated with good storage and had a balcony overlooking small garden. Few steps from the garden there was a swimming pool with loungers set in tropical garden.
We have both enjoyed our stay in Porto Bay, the reason for rating it just avarage is few things which were not up to the standard which we both expected.
The pousada offers breakfast service which was very good, but only small bar menu during the day (only few salads, pizzas and pastas, which weren't great), every time you would like to eat, you ned to travel to the town. In addition food is only offered from 1pm till 9pm.
There was quite a lot of refurbishment going on in the pool area, workers walking around all day, as our room was on a garden level there was constant traffic of people passing by our balcony so we had to have our curtains closed at all time and our privacy on the poolside was disturbed as well.
Moving on to the room, like i said before, great room but lots of other things lets it down. Bed linen was always feeling very damp and the smell of damp was overpowering, it looked like the pillows and duvet was damp inside and never aired outside to dry, very uncomfortable. The linen was stained as well, and when we accidentaly spilled something over the linen, we found it turned upside down to hide the stain by the housekeepers (instead of beeing changed to new one...).
We had problems with hot water for majority of our stay, most of the time the water was freezing cold, we had to complain to the reception for it to be turned back on just to find it cold again next day.
Another thing was, we have forgotten the converter to the plugs and they could not provide us with one at the pousada, there was a desktop computer in the lounge which broke down on a second day of our stay and they never repair or replaced it. So we were left with no phones, cameras, laptops for duration of our stay..
There was quite a lot of building works going on all around the town and especially pousadas area, not the best to look at. Town centre was very pretty with lots of shops and restaurants. Most of shops were very overpriced, top end of Londons prices! Quite few of the restaurants tried to offer posh food, charging rediculous prices for it but they could not follow through with the quality, very poor for again top end London restaurant prices. On the other hand the typical Brazilian restaurans were very good, reasonably priced, food was delicious and we were spoiled for choice.
Overall good holiday but the standard of service is not quite yet there, no where close to the european level. We had good time, but next time we choose something offering right level of service for what you need to pay.
