“Lovely view”

Excellent place to stay.
The beach is fantastic.
Ask for a room with view.
It´s like been in your house.
Be aware if you have locomotion difficulties because the hotel is on a small hill.
Don´t expect a huge swimming pool (is something about 3 m x 5 m).

“Great, romantic and friendly place with great view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 May 2011

Casa Grande is a very romantic place to stay. We had a room with great sea view that gave us a very romantic feeling. When we arrived the owner directly suggested us a homemade Caprinha that we consumed while we could see the sun go down in the sea. The rooms are quite, romantic, but modern and gave us a nice Riviera the Maison feeling. Unfortunately there wasn’t a little minibar or refrigerator available. In the morning we had a great breakfast with fresh fruit, fresh baked croissants, pain and sweet muffins and cake. Offcourse completed with fresh juice and delicious Brazilian coffee. The service is great here and makes you feel like Brigitte Bardot herself. Allso the internet is very quick around here and available at every place. We planned to stay here for 2 nights, but after all we stayed here for 6 nights. We would definitely come back here when we’re in Buzios again.

“Really enjoyed the stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2011

We stayed in CasaGrande for New Years and really loved it!

The Pousada is situated on a little hill, with a killer view and sunset in the evening. Or rooms were very cute and cozy, designed in a country-house style and cleaned every day. Having breakfast on the terrasse was very nice and the were extremely friendly and caring. The staff were super friendly and helpful and we all fell in love with Toga, the cute housecat. Compared to the rest of Búzios, which was CROWDED with people over New Years, it felt like a great little retreat.

What might disturb some people is that the pool is indeed very small and there are only 2 sun chairs next to it. We didn't mind as we preferred spending the days at one of the beaches in Buzios and just came back to enjoy a sundowner Caipirinha on the terrasse. Joao Fernandes (the beach right next to CasaGrande) was ok for swimming and snorkling but I would not recommend it for spending the whole day there - to small with WAY too many people and (but this might vary according to the season). The pousada was also quite hard to find so make sure you take some good maps.

I would definitely go back there!

“Good place to stay in Joao Fernandes beach”

I agree with what some people said before me: the fact that the hotel cannot be classified as boutique, the size of the pool, the steepness of the cobble hill (you have to leave the car down below on the street when it's raining), the boring breakfast (they charge extra for things like eggs, granola and yogurt), the lack of a fridge in the room, the lack of sign-posting and directions to the hotel on their website (I suggested this to management and they said the reason they don't have any directions is because most of their guests are Argentines who are picked up by vans at Rio de Janeiro Airport and taken straight to Buzios).
I am Brazilian and I have to say I am a little prejudiced against Argentines (as almost all Brazilians are) but the people who manage the hotel (Lucia and Patricia and Santiago who is not a manager but mans the hotel at night) are good-blooded (as we say in Brazilian Portuguese). They've been living in Buzios for a long time, mingled with the locals very well and are very attentive.
We went there with two small children because friends had recommended and I got very disappointed at first. The hotel is up in the hill with staircases everywhere, the swimming pool takes up almost the whole entrance space, there is a steep cobble hill to park the car (you have to hold the doors with your back if you want to take anything or anybody out of the car), old carpets you can trip on, the slow and (agree) boring breakfast served individually on the tables which makes it slow (my husband got really impatient after waiting 40 minutes to be served breakfast).
However, all these details were camouflaged by good customer service during our stay and our experience at the hotel ended up being very positive.
Our children were treated with affection and care by everybody, we loved the informal atmosphere, all our requests were fulfilled promptly. The room we stayed (room 1 next to the kitchen) was very spacious with a lot of storage cupboards (very important when you're traveling with children) and the cleaning was impeccable - I put a painting I didn't like under the bed and when I looked for it to put it back on the wall it was no longer there!
All in all a good place to stay in Joao Fernandes.

“The Hotel cannot, in any way, be classified as "Boutique". It is very poor and only a "Guesthouse" at best.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2010

Let me state what I understand by "Boutique" to describe a hotel.
At a basic level it will provide the amenities of the big chains i.e. great rooms, clean bathrooms stocked with good quality soaps, good food, great local knowledge.
In addition, to classify as boutique, there should be friendly personal service, rooms that are above the chain "average", bathrooms that have had additional care put into them, food that is fresh and cooked to order, perhaps DVD or IPod connections in rooms etc

Casa Grande Buzios fails on both levels.

The rooms are very poor. Old fixtures and fittings, cracks in walls, cracks in baths. Cleaning that barely cleans. TV's that have 4 very fuzzy channels. Rooms with no fridges. The same basic breakfast every day. A Swimming pool that is barely 5 metres long, with cracked tiles. Non-existant service.
We really could go on.

After the first night my wife and I wanted to leave. I found another hotel 5 minutes away from Case Grande that was closer to the beach, had much better rooms, better facilities, better pool etc. for 20% less than what we were charged at Casa Grande.
Unfortunately we could not leave. We had paid 50% upfront, with the remaining 50% on arrival. We talked to the management about our unhappiness and they let us move room to the best in the hotel (for no additional money). This room was much better than our first, but still not worth what we paid and the hotel was still awful.

Buzios was a great place - we know becase we spent so much time outside of the hotel.

Casa Grande has a very slick website. Please ignore it, as it in no way represents the hotel. For the money they charge there are lots of hotels near by that are so very much better.
