Angra dos Reis is about 3 hours away from Rio de Janeiro. It is a place to go to get on one of the many tourist boats and go spend time in the pristine, uninhabited islands of the coast. The boats visit many beaches, stopping for a quick swim in each. We are talking white sand, nice clear (cold) water.
The city of Angra itself is NOT worth spending any time in. Skip it. Stay at a nice resort instead. Go to the Frade. There is a beautiful Golf course, well kept tennis courts (the clay ones were great). The kids will love the horses, petting zoo, and horse-pulled buggy. The beach is semi-private (Brasil does not allow private beaches). But only hotel guests make it to the secluded stretch of sand. The pool has a waterfall feature and zero gradient entry (which is popular with the little kids). There is also a kids club (but not enough activities in said club). Oh, there are bikes, a beautiful hike to a waterfall...I was extremely satisfied with the hotel location. The food buffett was plentiful, varied and staff was friendly. They also have boat rides (recommended).
What I did not like: no evening entertainment. Once the sun is down, there is little to do. They have a bar (just ok) and a pool table. Seriously lacking evening entertainment. In similar resorts in Mexico and Hawaii we were always treated to shows or live music or a DJ at night. So this was a let down. If you get bored, get the car, drive 45 minutes past the hotel and enjoy BEAUTIFUL Paraty for dinner and a stroll. This is a historic well preserved town with restaurants. The rooms are clean and very roomy. Some details need to be taken care off (peeling paint in small areas, sink drain that is slow)...But I really liked the property otherwise.
