“Good value for money but don't expect luxury”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 June 2007

This hotel was exceptionally good value for money. It is clean, well maintained and with new furniture, tv amd a/c etc. Also good breakfast. Hoewever they stuff the rooms with too many beds so there is no space at all. The bathroom/shower was large, waste of space in my opinion. I understand that if you want something cheap, this is the best you can get in Foz. I talked to other tourists and they said they paid similar prices for somewhat lower quality hotels. They are also very reponsive to email, and accept booking without a credit card, which was nice. Also free wireless internet which was important for me (in another hotel they charged me for internet more than I paid here for room, internet and breakfast).

“good but not great”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 June 2007

this hotel was very nicely furnished, I think it was renovated sometime last year. The staff were very helpful and most spoke English. The rooms and bathroom were spacious, with good amenities. Our hot water was not working on arrival but this was immediately sorted out by the staff once contacted. The breakfast was one of the best I had in a Brazilian hotel, with a complete array of hot western food as well as the local fruits, cakes and pastries. The swimming pool was tiny, as was the deck area. The lounge with pool and foosball tables was a nice touch and good for socialising. Overall it was a pleasant stay.

  • Disliked — quite a bit of noise from the area surrounding the hotel, distance from the main shopping street (15-20min walk)

“Oh well”

I chose this hotel based on the reviews of other travelers. I must say that there were quite a few things that were not up to my expectations based on the reviews I've read. For once, I paid about $43 a night, not bad for a hotel in general, but for the hotel class rather expensive in Brazil. We (my girlfriend and I) stayed there for 3 nights. The staff was somewhat helpful but was also very busy trying to push their 'special deals' on you and most questions about local attractions were first answered with: check with our travel agency. Only upon further inquiry did we get some basic answers such as which bus to take and what the opening/show times were for certain attractions. Then they have these ‘coupons’ for the restaurant next door, where you get a $R5 discount per person for a total price of $R70 for two (drinks not included). We didn’t take the offer but found a comparable place (buffet with meat service) a few blocks away where we paid $R25 (yes, total for two, drinks (beer and juice) included). This is generally what you should expect to pay for a reasonably good meal for two in Brazil. Just a tip on the side: on most menus the meal portions are usually sufficient for two (i.e. only order one meal for two). Back to the hotel: yes, the rooms are small, and it’s no big deal when you are out all day anyway. However, it was very hot and humid during our stay which means you’ll be hitting the shower quite often. There was no room service at all on day 2 which meant we had to reuse the wet towels from the previous day (we eventually did ask for more towels at the reception). Don’t bother trying to find soap or shampoo in the bathroom (you do get a tiny soap to wash your hands at the sink). You’ll have to go to the local supermarket to get it. A nuisance and a waste of time as well. Most of the guests at the hotel were foreigners who probably found their way to the hotel like I did, through a review site. That also means that the reviews very often seem to be based on standards applied from the visitor’s home country, which almost certainly would lead to the hotel perceived to be a great bargain. I was not impressed.

That was perhaps the best place in Brazil during my entire trip. Amazingly cheap, I paid 50R a night, good room, clean and new, but small, however what do you do in your room besides sleeping. Safe and the staff speaks english.

“excellent value and location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2006

My wife and I spent 3 days at the Del Rey in early June. It was excellent value at 80 reals for a double room per night- booked by email. The room was simple, clean sheets and towels every day, cold water in the wash hand basin but a very hot shower in the walk in shower, individual air conditioning for our room. breakfasts were good with a a range of juices, cereals, cold cuts, and scrambled eggs and sauasages, plus numerous breads both sweet and savoury. The hotel is conveniently located about 150 metres from the main bus station and a further 100 metres will bring you to a large supermarket-Super muffato. The hotel has links with triplice travel who will pick you up from the airport for 35 reals, but it is not difficult to catch a bus from the airport for 1.85 reals, and ask for directions at the bus station at the tourist info place there, where they speak excellent English. Triplice travel offer an excellent value trip to the Argentinian falls for 40 reals plus 25 reals for the park entrance fee. Foz is a lovely city and the weather in early June- their winter - was in the mid 20's to early 30's with no rain or mosquitos! I would recommend the Del Rey without hesitation as an excellent base for visiting the Iguacu Falls. I would recommend doing the Argentinian falls first as that park visit gets you very close to the water, and do the Brazilian falls the following day in the morning when the sun is shining on the Argetinian falls and you get a better perspective of the overall falls. If you have the time, a bus trip up to the Itaipu dam- a whole 1.85 reals- and you get a free film and bus ride to see the largest hydro electric station on the planet.
