“Good for the money”

I booked through hostel world, we got the room for about usd $50.00 which is good value, the room is fairly basic and could do with a bit of maintance but the public areas are very smart. the bathroom was good . The room had air con and cable tv with films in english which was great for us as there is not much to do in Foz in the night . Great location to get to the brasilian side as bus goes from across the road.
Our friends stayed on teh Argentine side and prefered it there and said the accomodation was even cheaper.
In terms of the falls, the argentine side was better and i would fully recommend the boat ride on the argetine side.
The tourism guy in teh hotel booked all our travel to argentine side and our flights to Buenos Aires which was useful.
I would stay here again.

  • Liked — air con , cable tv. helpful staff
  • Disliked — breakfast was low quality even though it looked like alot of choice. stale cerials etc

“Confirm your booking”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2008

I booked this hotel for 2 nights on Dec 27th. Our flight arrived early hours Dec 28th, which was delayed by 1 hr so I think by the time we got to the hotel it was 2.30-3am. The night manager didnt want us to leave the taxi and although he couldnt speak english and we have very limited Portueguese, it was clear there were no rooms available, dispite me showing emailed confirmation from the hotel of our room booking.

He walked us a couple of doors down to another hotel of a similar standard, however the bed was like a slab of concrete (and I like hard beds) as was the pillow, so we had a dreadful night sleep. The next morning my husband went back to Hotel Del Rey to find out what had happened. The Day Manager was very surprised as he had seen us in the computer reservations the day before, so someone gave up our room. That someone would do this surprises me as the late flight we arrived on was a daily flight, and every flight I took within Brazil (6 in total) were all at least running 1 hr late with the exception on one flight.

The Day Manager did make a room available to us immediately (they had some early morning departures) and gave us a discounted rate without prompting. I have no complaints about the hotel other than what happened to us, however I would have preferred to pay the price we were expecting and have the room we booked as per our confirmation for two nights. I definately would recommend you stay at this hotel, however if you are on a late flight, I would include this information in your booking to hopefully prevent someone giving up your booking.

“Good value for money but don't expect luxury”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 June 2007

This hotel was exceptionally good value for money. It is clean, well maintained and with new furniture, tv amd a/c etc. Also good breakfast. Hoewever they stuff the rooms with too many beds so there is no space at all. The bathroom/shower was large, waste of space in my opinion. I understand that if you want something cheap, this is the best you can get in Foz. I talked to other tourists and they said they paid similar prices for somewhat lower quality hotels. They are also very reponsive to email, and accept booking without a credit card, which was nice. Also free wireless internet which was important for me (in another hotel they charged me for internet more than I paid here for room, internet and breakfast).

  • Liked — value for money
  • Disliked — door lock, clothes hangers, lack of shampoo etc

“good but not great”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 June 2007

this hotel was very nicely furnished, I think it was renovated sometime last year. The staff were very helpful and most spoke English. The rooms and bathroom were spacious, with good amenities. Our hot water was not working on arrival but this was immediately sorted out by the staff once contacted. The breakfast was one of the best I had in a Brazilian hotel, with a complete array of hot western food as well as the local fruits, cakes and pastries. The swimming pool was tiny, as was the deck area. The lounge with pool and foosball tables was a nice touch and good for socialising. Overall it was a pleasant stay.

  • Disliked — quite a bit of noise from the area surrounding the hotel, distance from the main shopping street (15-20min walk)

I chose this hotel based on the reviews of other travelers. I must say that there were quite a few things that were not up to my expectations based on the reviews I've read. For once, I paid about $43 a night, not bad for a hotel in general, but for the hotel class rather expensive in Brazil. We (my girlfriend and I) stayed there for 3 nights. The staff was somewhat helpful but was also very busy trying to push their 'special deals' on you and most questions about local attractions were first answered with: check with our travel agency. Only upon further inquiry did we get some basic answers such as which bus to take and what the opening/show times were for certain attractions. Then they have these ‘coupons’ for the restaurant next door, where you get a $R5 discount per person for a total price of $R70 for two (drinks not included). We didn’t take the offer but found a comparable place (buffet with meat service) a few blocks away where we paid $R25 (yes, total for two, drinks (beer and juice) included). This is generally what you should expect to pay for a reasonably good meal for two in Brazil. Just a tip on the side: on most menus the meal portions are usually sufficient for two (i.e. only order one meal for two). Back to the hotel: yes, the rooms are small, and it’s no big deal when you are out all day anyway. However, it was very hot and humid during our stay which means you’ll be hitting the shower quite often. There was no room service at all on day 2 which meant we had to reuse the wet towels from the previous day (we eventually did ask for more towels at the reception). Don’t bother trying to find soap or shampoo in the bathroom (you do get a tiny soap to wash your hands at the sink). You’ll have to go to the local supermarket to get it. A nuisance and a waste of time as well. Most of the guests at the hotel were foreigners who probably found their way to the hotel like I did, through a review site. That also means that the reviews very often seem to be based on standards applied from the visitor’s home country, which almost certainly would lead to the hotel perceived to be a great bargain. I was not impressed.
