“Worn hotel on polluted beach”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2010

This is the Caesar Park property that has been rebranded with one of Sol Melia's brands. The night I stayed there, there was a noisy fashion event going on, causing considerable delays for guests at the elevators.
The non-smoking room came with a strong tobacco scent, which was coming from the curtains. Fortunately, the windows opened - so I had the sound from the event instead of tobacco smell. In general, the room looked worn, with the exception of the bathroom, which seemed to have been recently refurbished. In spite of the rooms being nicely sized, the bathrooms feel cramped. The TV was flickering, with a very poor image. The free internet option was extremely slow - forget using skype or anything requiring a little more speed/bandwidth. Better to pay - even if you want to do some basic e-mail. Given the hour, I did not complain or ask for any of the problems to be fixed, for I know that this type of request can easily turn into nightmares where one gets processed with no solution at the end.
I had dinner at the oriental restaurant on the hotel premises, which featured nice sashimi, but painstakingly slow service (there were only three other tables).
So, after not such a good night's sleep I find a very nice breakfast buffet, with plenty of fruit and a grand variety of other choices. Definitely the high point of the hotel.
Service, when requested, was very friendly and my frontdesk interactions were with efficient and helpful staff.

“Feels like entering a 5* but does not feel like that when you leave”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 August 2010

Entrance and restaurants are smart, and the rooftop gym and pool are good, problem lies in the rooms. These are dated and dingy with dirty carpets, sagging mattress and very noisy and totally ineffective airco. It was set to 77*F but was still at 83* three hours later and making a noise like a jet engine. Luckily the outside air was OK so turned it off. Room service was the other problem, taking 45 minutes to deliver a salad which was different to the one ordered and was wilted and inedible. They delivered what was ordered 10 mins later, and to give them credit did not charge after my complaint.
Overall, not a great experience. I only stayed here as the Luzeiros hotel was full - that horel is much better.

“Nice place to Stay in Fortaliza”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2010

This hotel is listed as a 5 star, however it's time to update the place. The room was clean and spacious, similar to a US style hotel. The lobby is real nice with a bar and piano player in the center. The hotel has 13 floors with the pool and health club on the roof. My room (facing the side street) had two twin beds which are not very comfortable with only a sheet and a thin blanket. Bathroom has a tub and shower which are nice but you can see many signs of wear in the room. Internet was so slow it's unusable. Breakfast was included on the 2nd floor and was fantastic. Staff was very friendly and helpful at all times. Next time I come here I will try to locate a more updated Hotel with newer beds. If not I would stay here again.

“In the restaurant, we were treated like Kings!”

Well for anyone dining in the Hotel Gran Marquise, it is a true pleasure. We had buffet breakfast included in our 11 day stay and it was a very nice offering. Plenty of fresh fruit that was quite tasty and even served up with some artistry for visual delight as well. Many choices of juices and good coffee which was always kept ready on our table. The chef cooking was pleasant though did not speak English and definitely up for trying new types of traditional omelets and a strange type of omelet made from the root of a tree, called Tapioca (?). It was dryer but depending on what you chose to put in it, was interesting. But for a Midwest boy, the traditional was my favorite. As good as the food was, and the staff kept the buffet full even on the huge Sunday crowd, the highlight of the morning meal was the staff. From either of the two young hostesses with brilliant smiles and an attitude of always willing to help pronounce or even teach a Portuguese phrase and able to secure a table outside in minutes when all seemed full, to the waiters calling to us by name and waving. Oftten the waiters would make their way over to us, shaking our hands in greeting and escorting us to a table we often sat and even one time moved our plates to another table that they felt gave us a better view of the entire restaurant and patrons there. What a great feeling of importance to just common vacationers! These waiters were happy to also suggest Portuguese phrases for use in the restaurant as well. Most all in the restaurant staff spoke excellent English and I am sure they spoke other languages as well. A very fine staff indeed.

“Worth the stay...”

We enjoyed our stay at the Gran Marquise. With a splendid location, the hotel has a pool on the top floor with a magnificent view of the ocean. I found my room to be spacious, the bathroom newly redone. The mattress was however strangely lumpy and soft spoiling the magnificent king size bed. Breakfast was delicious with a wide variety of dishes. Lots of fresh fruit as is custom in Brazil.
The beach in front of the hotel is polluted so we ended up going to the well known Praia do Futuro which is very lively to say the least.
The boardwalk in front of the hotel is always full of bustling activity and from 5pm a night market makes it an agreeable place to stroll.
I thought the beach kit that is available in the room for you to take along when going out to the pool or beach was a nice touch.
Its true that the issue with the elevator and the insertion of your room key to make it work is hard to grasp at first but I assume this is a necessary measure to avoid security problems with people that aren't guests of the hotel going up to the room floors.
