Beautifully restored old building. Every room is unique – be sure to check the website to pick the one that most appeals. The plumbing works, the beds are comfie, the linens first rate, and the décor is downright magical – in the rooms, the corridors, and the lobbies. We loved our street view room with a balcony accessed through floor-to-ceiling doors that let in the breeze and the street music of all sorts. The street settles down around 10 pm or so. If you prefer silence that begins earlier than that, consider a pool or patio view room. The breakfasts are excellent and they’ll serve you at tables set out on that wonderful street if you request. That pedestrian-only street has cathedrals at each end, with shops, restaurants, a fountain, and a parade of Brazilian fashion and fun-to-watch tourists, vendors, and costumed Candomblé women in between. (The costumed women do charge for photos.) There is a vendor of fresh coconut milk (a fine mix if you BYO) across the street, as well as some cheap places to buy bottled water. The restaurant serves fine food at night, but the hotel is within easy walking distance to a cluster of restaurants with outdoor tables in the sea breeze, the glorious Maria Mata Mouros restaurant, and many others offering just about any regional, ethnic, or tourist food you may prefer. Every building lining the street is colorfully restored. Service at the Villa Bahia is friendly, but room service can be unreliable. There is always an English-speaker at the desk.
