We had asked for a booking at the Pestana Convento do Carmo but our UK agent, Imagine Latin America, advised us to stay at Casa do Amarelindo. The former might be very good but it is just outside the centre of the old town and that would have been more of a problem as we arrived in Salvador when the police were on strike and there had been some riots on the streets. We had no problems as it happened and felt quite safe walking around as Casa do Amarelindo is really in the centre of the old town. It is an old house which has been very well converted into a beautiful small hotel with lots of really good touches and with beautiful views over the harbour. Perhaps the initial greeting by the check-in clerk and owners is a bit over the top in that so much information is given which can be difficult to assimilate after travelling all day.
The bedrooms are incredible - we have not slept in a 3 metre wide bed before - very comfortable. The patio for breakfast and dinner is also very pleasant. The hotel has much more to offer than almost any other small hotel we have stayed in. It is however a converted old building and some of the very minor fittings are a little damaged and climbing into the bath to have a shower is a big step.
