Location was bad. It was a 20-30 minute taxi ride from the center (Pelourinho and Barra). The beach is about a 10-15 walk. Rooms/bath are small with so-so views -- even if you get what they call "ocean views". Breakfast choices were limited, but loved the tapioca omelette that they specially make. Internet access at the business center is about $10/hour. There are no modern or chain hotels in the Pelourinho or Barra areas. So either you are ready to take taxi rides wherever you go, or you should consider staying at a "pousada".

“Holiday Inn - Only for Conventions”

I recently stayed at the brand new Holiday Inn, which is located next to the convention center (in between the Aeroclube Mall and the inland highway). If you are attending a convention, it would be a convenient place to stay but otherwise (say, if the Sofitel is full) it is not a great choice. The rooms are very small and the bathrooms are positively tiny. The plumbing is very noisy, I got up in the middle of the night because I was sure a pipe had burst in the bathroom...but it was just someone upstairs taking a shower. The location is too far to walk to the beach or anywhere other than the convention center, so if you do not have a car you will be taking cabs all the time. Parking is outside and not in a secure lot. On the plus side, the breakfast was simple but good and the rooms were clean.
