We stayed at Txai for 4 days to end a month-long trip to South America so we were lookng for luxury, relaxation and a chance to explore the countryside as well as do some snorkelling.
Our standard bungalow was well maintained and OK but we have stayed in more luxurious eco resorts in South America. (We didn't have an outdoor shower nor a jacuzzi although this didn't bother us.) We experienced the same as a previous reviewer who complained that when they arrived very little was explained and we were quite confused about the site and the general arrangements. We actually had to ask for a map of the site.
We thought the food was poor and lacked the variety one would expect in a high-calibre resort. We went to several non-gourmet buffets in local restaurants while travelling in Brazil which were far better. Unfortunately our travel agent had booked us half board which meant the not-very-hot buffet each lunchtime. NB Here it doesn't mean breakfast and dinner, so beware! We were upset to discover that on the Saturday night the restaurant was closed (we hadn't been told or discovered this) and we had no option but to have the lobster-featured buffet (and we don't eat seafood). To add insult to injury, no prices were quoted and we were given a meal bill (no drinks) which amounted to c £40 per head and - whether coincidence or not - we were both ill the next day, the only illness in a whole month.
Trips by their own minibus into Itacaré happened once each evening (pity they didn't do a morning trip too) but well worth going. There are loads of restaurants and the atmosphere is fun.
We had expected to take a few trips but we were horrified by the prices. First it was an effort to extract the prices from the staff and we found that a 5 hour trip (involving a 4.3km walk, canoes and a swim plus drinks) was c£70 per head. We wanted to do an all-day 4 x 4 trip to different beaches as featured in their brochure which was 'only' c£60 per head as we had specifically brought our snorkels, but were unable to do it as it required a minimum of 4 people.
Other reviewers have commented on the lack of professionalism of the staff and, although they were all very sweet and charming, we would agree. We never discovered who was managing the place. Most of the staff didn't speak English but it is, after all, a Brazilian resort for Brazilians!
ON the positive side, the location and beach are absolutely stunning and the pools, setting and general design are excellent. The public rooms which seemed grossly under-used are filled with beautiful furniture, local art and wonderful books. There is also complimentary internet use.
We found the transfers between the resort and Ilheus very good and we too appreciated the private lounge at Ilheus airport while we waited for our plane.
