“Comfortable and adequate”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

My opinion may be a little biased, as I had been in the middle of the jungle for an entire week in difficult accomodations. Not at a hotel, but had a bedroom, bathroom, no air conditioning, no hot water etc. Had to sleep with mosquito net and generator went off at 2 am. SO....

So the Tropical seemed like a slice of civilization to me after that. Our room was very nice, with two queens, an adequate bathroom with everything working. Clean, air conditioning worked great etc. The food was very good at the evening buffet, and we enjoyed the breakfast. I think we paid $170 a night included breakfast. The beds were firm, sheets were clean.

Room Tip: we were on the street side and we heard sirens some. But we have a sleep machine on our I phone whic...

“Don't be fooled by the fancy photos this place is very average”

Stayed one night (thank goodness it was only one night). Before going on an Eco Tour. It's billed as a top 5 Star Hotel and all the billboards and photos are fancy but years out of date. The place was very run down and the bathrooms were mouldy. We complained and were given free wi if. That would have been great except for the fact that he wi if was broken! When we checked out they still tried to charge for the free non working wi if. In the end we settled for not paying for any extras. I would never go back.

It's worth noting that the hotel is being refurbished. Maybe in 6 months if you can get a refurbished room it may be ok but they also need to rebuild the restaurant and pool area.

Room Tip: Get a refurbished room from Mid 2012

“OK, but room for improvement”

We stayed in Tropical Manaus for New Year's Eve on our way to a lodge in the forest. The hotel is quite big, and has an interesting atmosphere, but is not really worth the price. The rooms are ok in size and the wooden furniture and decorations are a nice touch, but the maintenance is a bit behind. The pool is ok in size, but was very crowded when we were there. There are several places to get food/drinks in the hotel - the bar by the pool was more expensive than in the hotel. Breakfast was nice, a big buffet with fruits, bread, sweets and even possibility to make grilled sandwiches. All in all, it's an ok hotel but far from the city centre and not the best value.

Room Tip: The bottom floor rooms in the three wings can face the pool area and thus have people walking just o...

“Not a bad place on your way to somewhere else...”

I stayed in this hotel while en route to a fishing trip in the rain forest. The hotel is fairly old but but charming. The hotel lobby and bar are very well appointed. The rooms are outdated but the woodworking in the hotel is very interesting. If you are passing through, it will keep you dry and clean.
The hotel is absolutely gigantic. It can be a very long walk to your room (several hundred meters).
If you are there for more than a day and are looking to be comfortable, try somewhere else.

Room Tip: Check that the air conditioner works prior to accepting the room.

“Elegant hotel for 1950s but not for 2010s - sorry”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

My partner and I stayed as part of a stop-off for a night on a Brazilian trip. When we arrived we were shown to a damp and dirty room with soaking wet stinky sheets, ominous stains on the linen and mould in the bathroom. yikes. the hotel itself was kinda creepy - lack of lights in the corridors and the art deco appearance. I think it would have been nicer back in the Al Capone days but it really wasn't fun when we had just come off a long flight and were really tired. Anyway, we made a fuss and were shown to a MUCH nicer room. the same thing happened when we returned from our Amazonian adventure (i.e. stop-off on the way back) - you had to make a fuss to get a clean room, which puts a downer on things. On the plus side, i enjoyed the soup for breakfast and we went to the beach restaurants nearby in the evening - everyone was really friendly. The hotel has lots of interesting facilities (zoo, shops, disco) and I really hope that they have had a chance to upgrade the rooms because it would look amazing. the building could be stunning.
