“Beautiful, but not for light sleepers!”

Booking the room was easy. I checked the on line calendar to see what was available, then called in the reservation. When I entered to check in, the lobby area was empty. I walked to the office window, and waited- too long. I actually finally had to say "Hello?" to get the attention of the manager! She apologized, but after driving for several hours in bad traffic, it did not leave a good impression. I was given 2 keys, one for the main doors, and one for the room. I was told that the inn is not staffed after normal business hours, so I would need the key. Also, if there were any problems, a message service would get the call.
I had room 101, the smallest (and cheapest). It is in the back corner, facing the parking lot. I liked the 2 sets of windows, and there is a little porch area outside the french doors. The room contained a queen bed, an armoir with a small tv, ice bucket and 2 bottles of water. There was a small table with a coffee maker and supplies, and an arm chair. There was very little room, but it worked for me as a single. As an older home, it had very high ceilings. The bathroom was large and handicap accessible. It had a light/ fan, a bath light, and a heating light. The one thing I did not like about the room was the very slow/sometimes stopped toilet. Apparently this is not the only room with this problem, and there is a plunger there, so I assume that this has been the case for some time. Other rooms I visited were suites, with a sitting area and a bedroom- several also had a kitchenette area, with sink, fridge, and microwave.
The location is in downtown Ashland, within easy walking distance of the entire old town area- very quaint! As far as I know, it is the only one in the old town area. It is right behind the visitor center, which is also the Amtrak station. Be warned- there are trains all night long, and several blow whistles as they approach the town! During the day it is cool to see them, but even as a heavy sleeper I was woken more than once. The inn is also across the tracks from Randolph Macon College.
The breakfast is serve yourself. I got there late, so there wasn't much out- some bagels with a toaster, small boxes of cereal, a container of granola, supplies for coffee and tea, and ice water. There were packets of oatmeal and hot cocoa available as well.
The house is huge, with large areas downstairs and up for gatherings. There is a large front porch, and a balcony on the second floor with rocking chairs. The rooms on the back side of the second floor all have doors that open onto a shared balcony- great for our group, as we could gather and hang out, but may limit privacy.
In town, I enjoyed the small old fashioned grocery store down the street, which sells delicious roast chicken; the public library with a great little park and fountain out front, the bakery, and Ashland Tea and Coffee, which serves an amazing Sunday brunch!

“Falls short of its potential....”

My husband and I always enjoy staying at a B&B when we are traveling. Last weekend, we attended a wedding in Ashland, Va, and I booked a room at the Inn. Upon check in, we were greeted by a very unwelcoming girl at the front desk who asked me to sign for the room, handed us our keys, and told us she locks the front doors at 7:30. That was it; no 'welcome to the Inn', no "how was your drive", nothing. She never even looked at us or smiled. The room was pleasant enough; tidy and clean and comfortable beds. The bathtowels were a little frayed, but plentiful. By reading prior reviews, I realized that I was glad I had booked a room on the backside of the Inn as the VERY busy railroad tracks are located about 50 feet from the front door of the Inn, Some of the townspeople told us that approximately 50 trains pass by PER HOUR. I am a very light sleeper, but I can honestly say I didn't hear the trains during the night....another couple staying there were on the front of the house and said they didn't sleep all night because of the trains. I think the biggest disappointment was the "breakfast" part of the B&B -- it consisted of cold bagels, cereal, yogurt and fruit. I had no idea that the Inn's kitchen was closed and that no hot breakfasts are served....I wish it had said that somewhere on the website as I never would have booked the reservation. Neither my husband nor myself felt that the rate we paid warranted the quality of the accommodations and certainly the 'breakfast' was disappointing. We would have been better off at one of the chain motels.
On the positive side, the Inn's decor is quite charming; the porches are lovely; the location is ideal and it's right next door to Ashland Coffee and Tea, which we enjoyed far more than the Inn itself and where we ended up having a hot breakfast.
When we checked out, the same female who had checked us in was there. We deposited our keys and said 'thank you', but received no reply whatsoever. "Southern Hospitality" does not seem to apply at the Inn. I would not stay there again.

Dear Guest,
Thank you for staying and taking the time to send in feedback. We appreciate hearing from you. We are very proud of our inn and the wonderful accommodations that we offer our guests. We are the third inn to have been erected in Ashland since the Civil War. The first two burned to the ground. The railroad is what brought the town and the inn here in the first place. There are about 30 - 50 trains a DAY:) if we had more we would never get from one side of the tracks to the other! Haha:) I do have sets of earplugs at the front desk for those that feel they will be disturbed by the trains, a notion that is foreign to townies and train buffs. We do not have a hot breakfast. We have never served hot breakfast in the entire 18 years of business, we do clearly state that a "Continental Buffet Breakfast" is included with the rental of the rooms. In the past we did have a restaurant that served brunch to the public on the weekends but unfortunaltey we had to close that portion of our business in 2008. There are several places in town to have a hot breakfast , one of which you discovered is the coffee and tea shop down the street. There are several restaurants that have recently added brunch to their offerings as well.

I hope that you will forgive us our short comings and know that we do take seriously all of your comments. We will work on those items that we can control. Please come back to visit when you are in the area.

Sincerely, Ann-Carol M. Houston, GM

“Delightful!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 June 2010

My husband stayed at the HCI for one night in May. The town was very busy so we felt fortunate to have a room. The young girl at the desk-who was a student-was very sweet and friendly. Our room was very nice and clean. We looked around the inn and were very pleased. Our breakfast was good-we didn't expect a gourmet meal-bagels, juice, cereal and fresh fruit. The same things we would have at home. I would definetly return. Everyone we came into contact with was very friendly. The train didn't bother me-esp. since I saw that the inn is right accross from the tracks. Very quaint B and B.

“Love this place but what has happened?”

I use to stay here twice a year- I won't be back - My second to last visit I was placed in a room close to the front desk- I arrived in the evening and was tired from the long journey- I went strait to bed- When I awoke I went into the bathroom what a nightmare it had been used before I got there- what a mess- I complained to the front desk how dirty it was and they just shrugged it off- It was disgusting!!!!
I figured I would try it again a year later maybe things had turned around and it had just been an accident , so I gave them another shot- In January of this year I booked one night with them - Front desk was unfriendly when I arrived- The room was located upstairs this time and it again was very dirty- hadn't been dusted or cleaned /anything since year one- Bed linens were old and worn out- Bathroom dirty and floors looked like they were never cleaned with vac as well- Even the veranda in back had an ash tray at every door full of butts. Cleaning people must smoke instead of clean- It's really too bad because it really is such a nice building but apparently they are trying to run it on a shoe string- The management could care less- It really is ashame- I actually left a dust covered tissue that I wiped from the tv stand next to the housekeeping card- Figured they would get the message- In the morning I went down for coffee it was cold! I complained to the front desk once again they could care less- They had the housekeeper call me- No reason to call me just clean the place- Disgusting and it's really sad that they would let the place go like this- Never again would I stay here....

“Has wonderful potential but is getting shaby.”

We chose the Inn because of its location and the wonderful pictures of the building . At check in we did not feel welcome and it was as if we were intruding on the people in the office working on otherthings. We were in room 103 which is down a short hall from the front desk. Walking to and from the room was a small adventure because the carpet is so lose and wavey that I worried that I would trip and fall.
Our small dog was allowed to accompany us but could only be in our room and no where else in the hotel, not even the lobby. The room towels were frayed, the box spring was torn with springs exposed, and the door knob to the outside porch came off the first day and was never properly repaired. Such a shame!

I was so sorry to find out only through tripadvisor that you were unhappy with your accommodations. Our inn is fast approaching our 18th anniversary and as with all properties we are constantly improving and updating. Just this past year we added wet bars to 5 of our rooms and turned one guest room into a suite for a family of four! If there is anything that you would like to see changed please feel free to let me know in person so it can be addressed promptly. As for the pets, we do allow small dogs in the two downstairs guest rooms only because they do have direct access to the outside. Unfortunately, other guests as well as the health department do not look kindly on having them walking throughout the property. Again, I am sorry that you were unhappy, I only wish I had known while you were visiting.
