We stayed at the Hampton Inn & Suites for a weekend get-away adjoining a trip for business.
Positive:
* The hotel is located conveniently close to the airport and in the Crystal City neighborhood which does have restaurants nearby.
* The front desk staff was great, especially Annette, who went above and beyond what we expected. When picking up complimentary cookies, my partner commented that all he needed was some milk to go along with the cookies. Annette then went into the kitchen and got him a cup of milk! Also, at check-in I requested extra towels and pillows for our room; the front desk was sure to follow-up with a call to make sure that we received them (which we had).
* Our suite was spacious and comfortable.
* Overall, the room was quiet. There was some traffic noise from outside the windows, but that is expected when staying in an urban area. I did not hear neighbors in nearby rooms, except for hearing the water in the shower from the room above once.
Negative:
* Shuttle service was provided to and from the airport, but it was less than satisfactory. Although the airport was only three minutes away, we waited 15 - 20 minutes to be picked up upon arrival. Then, when returning to the airport, I asked to be dropped off at the rental car return area. The driver refused and said I had two choices: drop-off at Terminal A or B. (Regan National is quite spread out and it is a 15 minute walk from Terminal A to the rental car counter.) Many hotels provide shuttle service to anyplace within a certain radius rather than giving "two choices."
* What's more, the arrangement for departing shuttles is not guest-friendly. On the day of our departure, I stopped at the front desk to ask for a shuttle to the airport in 15-20 minutes. The front desk person told me that the shuttle comes and goes all the time, not on any schedule, and advance requests cannot be made. My partner and I went into the breakfast buffet but kept watching for the shuttle driver to walk away from the front desk; that was the only way we could tell that he was leaving. He did not make a general announcement in the lobby/breakfast area. It seemed to be hit-or-miss for guests who were not standing at the front door waiting for the driver's whim.
* the breakfast buffet was terrible. I only expect the free hotel breakfast buffets to be mediocre, but this one is less than mediocre. The layout is poor; on the busy weekend the area was packed, with people bumping into each other. The breakfast was clearly understaffed; the food and food supplies were not kept replenished. Serving utensils were plastic forks and heavy paper plates -- neither pleasant nor environmentally sound. And the food quality was poor: the orange juice was basically orange-colored water; the "Canadian bacon" was a strange-flavored meat product; even the French toast sticks did not taste right -- more like cardboard than toast.
