My wife, Rebecca, and I made a whirlwind tour of Virginia over the week of Halloween, and our first stop was at the Copper Lantern Inn in Abingdon, VA. I had read several reviews, on this site, and decided I had to stay in this place. When I called Betty to check into reservations on the weekend, she called back and told me that we were in luck and that the Washington room had just had a cancellation and was available. I then had a 20 minute conversation with Mrs. Akers, and what a delightful lady she is. She asked about our plans, if we were seeing a show at the Barter theatre, and asked if she could make our dinner reservations for us, and recommended 2 restaurants to suit our needs: The House on Main, and the Tavern. As we had already booked our tickets for the Barter, she made the dinner reservations for us. Betty was in Florida when we arrived, but we were met by our new friend, Kim, who got us situated, and had a delicious glass of wine for us and some hors d'oeuvres...the fireplace was glowing in one of the family rooms. Perfect. We relaxed and chatted with Kim and sipped our wine. The house is decorated nicely, and is a nice mix of old and new...and my favorite thing about it was that it wasn't kitchy...a lot of B&B's seem to be stuck in the Victorian era, but this was cozy, and comfortable...and the bed was to die for. As a matter of record, my wife had a conversation with Kim about it, and our bed now emulates the one in the Washington room. Dinner at the House on Main was very good, and they treated us like royalty..Kim had informed them that we were celebrating our 14th anniversary, and they gave us many different things on the house...a pleasant surprise. After dinner, we came back in the back door, and Kim had made a homemade apple pie for us. The next morning, after a wonderful quiche prepared by Kim, we did the Creeper trail (top half), and though it wasn't snowing in town, it was at the top. Fortunately, Kim, in her infinite wisdom and preparedness, gave my wife and I each a pair of gloves, knowing that the wind was going to be cold on the hands, and she also offered scarves. That afternoon we got back, cleaned up, had some more wine in the parlor, met the other house guests, and went to eat at the Tavern restaurant. Another fine meal...we were so full, we passed on dessert, which Kim later told us, would have been on the house. A lovely stroll to the Barter for a fine production of the musical "Cabaret" and back to the house, where we shared some apple pie with the other house guests, who had also eaten at the Tavern (next to us) and saw Cabaret. I could go on and on about Kim and what a great person/innkeeper she is...how she cares about her guests, and making them comfortable...I could say how amazing the copper bathtub is...but I've said enough for now...why don't you go visit Miss Kim and tell her that her friends The Fleshmans sent you...we definitely plan to return to our new home away from home...where you might enter as strangers, but you leave as friends.
