We just returned from a vacation to the Carolinas and decided to stop in Abingdon, VA to bike the Virginia Creeper Trail which is a multi-purpose trail in western Virginia. While there are the usual chain hotel/motels near I-81, we wanted to say in the historic district of downtown Abingdon which has several B&Bs from which to choose.
After reading several reviews on TripAdvisor and researching as many of the B&Bs as possible, we inquired about availabiity at the Abingdon Boarding House via email. We received a quick response from the owner/innkeeper, Juanita, who was very accommodating.
Upon our arrival, we found an absolutely charming house dating back to 1840 that had been lovingly restored. We stayed in the Roosevelt room which included a beautiful king size bed with lovely bedding, fireplace, and new bath with large shower. The public areas include a cozy living room with beautiful furniture and fireplace which is next to the large dining room. All rooms are very tastefully decorated with just the right amount of antiques carefully placed throughout the house.
Breakfasts were a feast. The first day, Juanita prepared eggs, waffles, sausage, fresh fruit, juice and coffee and tea for us. The day we departed we had eggs, bacon, fruit, grits (at our request after Juanita asked if we like them), freshly baked bisquits, juice, coffee, tea. And, the portions were family style and plentiful. We ate every bit of the food because it was SO good.
The B&B is located 1 block from the Virginia Creeper Trailhead which is a 34 mile multi-purpose trail. We had planned on biking only half the trail, but thanks to Juanita's guidance, we were able to get a shuttle to the top of White Mountain and bike the entire trail. She went out of her way to help us which allowed us to truly explore the trail. She also provided us with suggestions for dining and other local attractions to make our visit as interesting as possible.
Overall, the Abingdon Boarding House was one of the best B&Bs we've ever had the pleasure to experience. As mentioned above, the house is charming, warm, and cozy. The food was wonderful and plentiful. And, Juanita is one of the most pleasant, fun-filled, kind innkeepers we've ever met. We felt like we had known her for a long time because she made us feel so welcomed and comfortable.
Do not miss this gem of a B&B if you're in the Abingdon area. You will not be disappointed!!
