We stayed one night at this cute B&B in May 2009. The weather was terrible and rained the whole time that we were there but as far as the B&B was concerned, everything was perfect. The room was very pretty, we were given the room with the balcony over the street which was nice. The owner is very nice, friendly and helpful.

We came to Vermont to see the fall colors. We did extensive research on B&B's. Hoping for the best, prepared for anything else, after two turns onto country roads at dusk that left us wondering, we found the bright, cozy Whitford House. If you have done your research, you've seen the professional reviews -- the physical facts, the amenities.

It's a tricky business being an innkeeper of a B&B. Be a great breakfast cook. Local foods, fresh. Something different -- lots of different things -- every morning. Warm, friendly, but not intrusive. Mature, if you are lucky even wise. Knows the locality in all respects. Where are the colors? The local artisans? The best places to eat? The ways to get there, enjoyably? Interest in you, with respectful distance. Shares personal news -- how is Demeter, the aged sheep? But not pressing, not overdoing it.

This is Barbara Carson. A caring person. Interested. Helpful. Engaging. Not quite family -- but you feel could be.

And if you read, what a wonderful library. You will see many old friends on the shelves, and future friends you want to meet.

A lovely inn out in the country with gardens and sheep and lots of lawn and views. The owner and her helpers were super accommodating and very nice. We were offered wine and cheese when we arrived Sat. evening, which we had on the wraparound porch. We also had a delicious and copious breakfast. The inn itself is very interesting - the main house is the original structure (1800ish) with a post and beam addition - it is set up and decorated with an artful flair while retaining the key elements of a house of that time period. They also have a nice art and book collection. The nearby town of Vergennes has some very nice dinner options for such a sleepy little hamlet. All in all a very copacetic vibe.

My husband and I stayed at the Whitford House Inn for 2 nights in July. We actually visited with my parents who were visiting from Australia. From the moment we arrived we knew we had stumbled upon a gem! The house is gorgeous and the bedrooms spacious and clean. Our room upstairs even had a huge free standing bath tub with views out over the fields.... heaven! The Carson's were fantastic hosts. Within half an hour of arriving Barbara had us sitting out on the front verandah enjoying a glass of wine and home made treats. The breakfasts were the most abundant we have ever experienced at an inn - it just keeps being bought out until you are full! Delicious waffles with bacon and maple syrup and blueberry pancakes. The area is fantastic - close to Lake Champlain and to the college town of Middlebury which is rich with galleries, craft and homewares - not to mention some great dining. Each day we headed out exploring, we couldn't wait to get back to the inn to relax on the rocking chairs on the porch under a huge tree. Without a doubt, a fantastic inn where you feel like you are staying with family and get real value for money. Highly recommended! We will be back nect time we visit Vermont - that's for sure.
